Job Overview: The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position at the UNOCC is designed for motivated individuals who are eager to support the work of the Research and Liaison Unit (RLU) or the Prevention Team. Interns will engage in a variety of tasks that involve monitoring, research, and analysis of political and security developments, human rights situations, and humanitarian issues. The role requires the preparation of visual slides and analytical briefs for senior UN leadership, utilizing tools such as Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel, as well as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for data visualization. Interns will also assist in compiling and processing information for presentations to Member States, participate in meetings, and draft summaries. Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be responsible for a range of duties including: monitoring and analyzing political and security developments, human rights situations, and humanitarian issues; preparing visual analytics and presentations for senior UN leadership; identifying and maintaining data sources and datasets; assisting in the preparation of senior-level correspondence and talking points; participating in meetings and drafting minutes; and supporting evidence-based decision-making through structured surveys. Interns will also be expected to work collaboratively with colleagues to achieve shared objectives and contribute to a positive team environment.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must demonstrate strong performance across the UN core competencies, including communication, teamwork, planning and organizing, accountability, and technological awareness. They should possess strong research and analytical skills, particularly in data visualization and management. Experience with Geographic Information Systems and mapping is desirable. Interns should be able to communicate clearly and effectively, manage competing priorities, and deliver results with reliability and professionalism. The ability to leverage technology to enhance efficiency and support analysis is also essential.
Educational Background: The minimum educational qualification required for this internship is a high school diploma. Additionally, candidates must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), or be enrolled in or have recently completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). Relevant coursework in international relations, political science, social science, public policy, economics, law, data analysis, or statistics is highly beneficial.
Experience: While specific prior experience is not mandatory, candidates with relevant coursework or internships in international relations, political science, or data analysis will be preferred. Strong research and analytical skills, particularly in quantitative and qualitative analysis, are highly desirable. Experience with data visualization tools and methodologies will also be advantageous for applicants.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is required for this internship, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
