Job Overview: The UN Rule of Law Intern position is designed to provide support to the Justice and Corrections Service (JCS) within the UN's Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) and the Department of Peace Operations (DPO). The intern will engage in substantive work related to justice and corrections, particularly within peace operations. This role is crucial for assisting host countries in delivering essential justice and prison services, strengthening criminal justice systems, and facilitating rule of law reforms. The internship is expected to last between four to six months, with a flexible work arrangement that can be adjusted based on the intern's needs. The intern will work full-time, with the possibility of part-time or remote options, and will be involved in various projects and initiatives that support the UN's mission in promoting justice and accountability.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will have a range of responsibilities, including but not limited to: assisting with the implementation of justice and corrections projects, conducting research and analysis, drafting case studies and background papers, and providing administrative support for meetings with internal and external partners. The intern will also assist in policy and guidance development efforts by researching legal, judicial, and correctional reform issues. Additional duties include preparing analysis on current developments related to the work of the JCS, supporting desk officers in peace operations, accompanying JCS staff to meetings, note-taking, writing summaries of meetings, and preparing public information materials. The intern may also be tasked with any other functions as requested by their supervisor, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the JCS's operations and initiatives.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), or be in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent). While professional work experience is not required, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Applicants should demonstrate proficiency in standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams, to effectively perform their duties.
Educational Background: Candidates must be students in the final year of their first university degree (Bachelor's or equivalent), or enrolled in a Master's or Ph.D. program. Alternatively, applicants who have completed a Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. program are also eligible. Proof of enrollment or completion must be provided during the application process, ensuring that candidates have the necessary academic background to contribute meaningfully to the internship.
Experience: While prior professional work experience is not a requirement for this internship, candidates should possess relevant academic knowledge and skills that align with the responsibilities of the position. The focus is on candidates who are currently pursuing or have recently completed higher education in fields related to justice, law, international relations, or similar disciplines.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this internship, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
