Job Overview: The Protection Specialist – Roving position is a critical role within the Danish Refugee Council, aimed at enhancing the protection programming across Sudan. Under the supervision of the Head of Programme, the Protection Specialist will work closely with the Protection Coordinator to lead and implement DRC's protection initiatives. This role requires a results-oriented individual who is committed to humanitarian principles and operational excellence. The Protection Specialist will provide technical leadership and quality assurance for various protection interventions, including General Protection (GP) and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) programs. The position emphasizes the importance of strengthening protection systems and ensuring effective program delivery through structured supervision, coaching, and technical support. Frequent travel to DRC’s area offices is expected, highlighting the dynamic nature of this role in addressing the needs of affected populations in diverse and challenging environments.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Protection Specialist will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including:
Technical Oversight of Protection Programming: Ensure that DRC's and partners’ protection interventions are designed and implemented according to best practices and inter-agency standards. Develop guidelines, SOPs, and tools to support quality protection activities. Provide guidance to field teams on GP and GBV case management, ensuring compliance with inter-agency guidelines. Conduct regular case reviews and technical supervision sessions for caseworkers. Monitor the implementation quality of psychosocial-support" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">psychosocial support activities and develop protection information management tools.
Coordination and Representation: Collaborate with Protection Managers, Team Leaders, and IM teams to strengthen integrated approaches. Participate in technical working groups and coordination forums to harmonize approaches in line with national guidance.
Monitoring, Reporting, and Development: Support the Protection Coordinator in planning protection-related proposals and develop monitoring tools. Conduct quality control and site monitoring to ensure services meet international standards. Review project reports and explore new business opportunities.
Management and Supervision: Provide technical supervision to protection staff, contribute to recruitment and performance management, and strengthen staff capacity through training and mentoring. Conduct internal and external trainings on protection-related issues.
Required Qualifications: The ideal candidate for the Protection Specialist position should possess the following qualifications:
Education: A minimum of a university or graduate degree in social studies, international development, gender, or a relevant field.
Experience: At least 5 years of work experience in the field of protection, with a minimum of 3 years in IDP/refugee settings or complex emergencies in a mid-level position. Demonstrated experience in areas such as General Protection, MHPSS, CP, GBV, or community-based protection is essential. Experience in emergency contexts is highly desirable. Proven ability to coordinate with national/local authorities and humanitarian forums is required.
Skills: Excellent analytical skills, ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and adapt in challenging environments. Experience in capacity building and facilitating trainings is also necessary.
Educational Background: Candidates must have a minimum of a university or graduate degree in relevant fields such as social studies, international development, or gender studies. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of protection work and the needs of vulnerable populations.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 5 years of work experience in the field of protection, with at least 3 years in a mid-level role within INGOs or UN agencies, particularly in IDP/refugee settings or complex emergencies. Candidates should have demonstrated experience in specific areas of protection, such as General Protection, GBV, or MHPSS, and should be familiar with the challenges faced in emergency contexts.
Languages: Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of Arabic or other local languages is considered an added advantage, as it enhances communication with local communities and stakeholders.
