With a mission to promote the rights of every child, UNICEF operates in over 190 countries, focusing on the most disadvantaged and excluded children and families. The organization emphasizes equity, ensuring that all children have the opportunity to survive, develop, and reach their full potential without discrimination. UNICEF's work is guided by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which outlines the universal rights of children and the responsibilities of governments to uphold these rights.
Job Overview: The Online Volunteer position is aimed at supporting UNICEF's Child Protection Work Stream (CPWS) initiative in Mozambique, specifically focusing on the development of Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) materials. The role involves contextualizing and creating educational materials that address the risks posed by improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and other explosive remnants of war (ERW) in conflict-affected areas. Volunteers will work closely with UNICEF staff to ensure that the materials are child-friendly, gender-sensitive, and culturally appropriate. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the safety and protection of children in a high-risk environment while gaining valuable experience in humanitarian education and child protection.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Support the contextualization and development of EORE and IED-related IEC materials tailored for conflict-affected areas in Mozambique, utilizing existing tools developed by UNICEF from other regions.
Contribute to the design and dissemination of context-appropriate EORE materials, ensuring that messaging is child-friendly and sensitive to gender issues.
Assist in training CPWS members and frontline workers on the delivery of EORE and safe practices related to explosive hazards.
Produce documentation in English and Portuguese, ensuring clarity and accessibility for diverse audiences.
Collaborate with CPWS members to integrate relevant local languages, such as Makonde, Makuwa/Makhuwa, and Swahili, into the educational materials.
Review approximately 5-7 documents throughout the assignment, which may include existing educational resources and new materials developed during the project.
Engage with Child Protection and Education Specialists to enhance understanding of child-friendly and gender-sensitive messaging in educational contexts.
Required Qualifications:
Strong understanding of child protection issues, particularly in conflict-affected settings.
Experience in developing educational materials or resources, preferably in humanitarian contexts.
Familiarity with explosive ordnance risk education or related fields is an asset.
Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and stakeholders, including local communities and humanitarian actors.
Proficiency in English and Portuguese is mandatory; knowledge of local languages is highly desirable.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with an emphasis on clarity and cultural sensitivity.
Educational Background: A background in education, social sciences, international development, or a related field is preferred. Candidates with relevant coursework or training in child protection, humanitarian response, or risk education will be given priority. A degree or equivalent experience in these areas is beneficial for understanding the complexities of working in conflict-affected environments.
Experience: While specific professional experience is not mandatory for this volunteer position, candidates should demonstrate relevant skills or knowledge through academic work, internships, or volunteer experiences. Previous involvement in humanitarian projects, particularly those focused on child protection or education in emergencies, will be advantageous. The role is suitable for individuals looking to gain practical experience in the field of child protection and education.
Languages: Proficiency in English and Portuguese is required for this position, as the materials will be developed in these languages. Knowledge of local languages such as Makonde, Makuwa/Makhuwa, and Swahili is considered a strong asset, as it will enhance the cultural relevance and accessibility of the educational materials being created.
Additional Notes: This is a volunteer position, and as such, it may not offer financial compensation. However, it provides valuable experience in a critical area of humanitarian work, with opportunities for professional development and networking within UNICEF. The role is expected to require a commitment of time over a specified duration, with flexibility in scheduling to accommodate the volunteers' availability. The position is open to individuals both nationally and internationally, reflecting UNICEF's commitment to inclusivity and diversity in its workforce.
