Job Overview: The UN Volunteer will play a crucial role in supporting the chief of section in the development, management, coordination, networking, implementation, and monitoring of an advocacy and communication strategy. This strategy aims to promote awareness, understanding, support, and respect for children's and women's rights, aligning with UNICEF's mission and priorities at both the country and global levels. The volunteer will be responsible for ensuring the effective execution of the 2026 communication work plan, which is designed to raise public awareness of children's issues, strengthen political will in support of UNICEF's objectives, and enhance the organization's credibility and brand. The role involves engaging with various stakeholders, including the media, partners, and the public, to effectively communicate UNICEF's initiatives and achievements.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Implement the 2026 communication work plan to support country program objectives and raise awareness of children's issues.
Maintain and develop a comprehensive contact list of journalists and media outlets, ensuring effective communication and collaboration with the media.
Conduct media, information, and education activities to promote understanding of children's and women's rights.
Organize press conferences and events, issue media materials, and ensure rapid dissemination of information to relevant audiences.
Collaborate with mass media for project site visits and coverage, and monitor the effectiveness of media materials.
Develop and maintain a contact list of individuals and organizations essential for achieving advocacy and communication objectives.
Identify and engage celebrities and influencers to support UNICEF's advocacy efforts and participate in special events.
Support global communications priorities and campaigns by disseminating relevant materials locally.
Mobilize resources for fundraising support through effective communication strategies and activities.
Required Qualifications: Candidates should possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage diverse audiences. Proficiency in media relations and experience in developing communication strategies are essential. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a commitment to children's rights and welfare, along with the ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders. Strong organizational skills and the capacity to manage multiple tasks effectively are also required. Familiarity with digital communication platforms and tools is advantageous, as is experience in advocacy and resource mobilization.
Educational Background: A bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, social sciences, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in advocacy, media relations, or child rights are preferred. Candidates should have a solid understanding of the principles and practices of effective communication and advocacy, particularly in the context of humanitarian and developmental work.
Experience: Candidates should have at least 2-3 years of relevant experience in communications, public relations, or advocacy, preferably within an international organization or non-profit sector. Experience working with media and developing communication strategies is highly desirable. Familiarity with UNICEF's mission and programs, as well as experience in fundraising and resource mobilization, will be considered an asset.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly local languages spoken in Kenya, is considered an advantage and may enhance communication efforts with diverse communities.
Additional Notes: The position is based in Nairobi, Kenya, which is a modern metropolitan city with access to essential services and facilities. The contract duration is specified, with the possibility of extensions based on funding availability and performance. The UN Volunteer will receive a Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) to cover basic needs, along with a settling-in grant if applicable.
