Job Overview:
The position involves conducting a technical assessment of crown breakage and sustainable harvesting practices specifically for Lansan (Protium attenuatum) in Saint Lucia. The role is crucial for understanding the ecological impacts of harvesting practices and developing strategies that promote sustainability in forestry. The contractor will be expected to analyze current harvesting methods, assess their impact on crown breakage, and recommend best practices that align with sustainable development goals. The assignment is set for a period of 8 weeks, during which the contractor will gather data, engage with local stakeholders, and compile a comprehensive report detailing findings and recommendations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The contractor will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Conduct field assessments to evaluate current harvesting practices of Lansan in Saint Lucia.
  • Analyze data related to crown breakage and its ecological implications.
  • Engage with local communities and stakeholders to gather insights and perspectives on harvesting practices.
  • Develop a set of recommendations for sustainable harvesting practices that minimize crown breakage.
  • Prepare a detailed report summarizing findings, methodologies, and recommendations for UNDP and relevant stakeholders.
  • Present findings to UNDP and other stakeholders, facilitating discussions on implementation of recommended practices.
  • Ensure compliance with local and international environmental standards throughout the assessment process.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong background in forestry, environmental science, or a related field. Proven experience in conducting ecological assessments and familiarity with sustainable harvesting practices are essential. Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret data effectively are required. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively engage with stakeholders and present findings.

Educational Background:
A minimum of a bachelor's degree in forestry, environmental science, or a related discipline is required. A master's degree or higher qualification in a relevant field will be considered an asset. Candidates should have a solid understanding of ecological principles and sustainable resource management.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least 3-5 years of relevant experience in conducting environmental assessments, particularly in forestry or natural resource management. Experience working with local communities and stakeholders in a Caribbean context is highly desirable. Familiarity with UNDP processes and procurement systems will be an advantage.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as all communications and reports will be conducted in English. Knowledge of local languages or dialects spoken in Saint Lucia would be considered a valuable asset, enhancing engagement with local communities.

Additional Notes:
This position is classified as an individual contractor role, and the assignment is expected to last for 8 weeks. The contractor will work remotely and may need to travel within Saint Lucia for field assessments. The deadline for proposal submission is set for 20-May-26 at 03:00 PM New York time.
