Job Overview: The Security and Safety intern" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Communications Intern will play a crucial role in supporting the Security and Safety Services team at UN Women in Nairobi, Kenya. This full-time internship is designed to assist in the identification, coordination, and educational development of strategic communication outputs within UN Women and the wider UN Security Management System (UNSMS). The intern will utilize the previously developed Strategic Communications Plan to identify tangible deliverables and develop an implementation strategy that includes various communications products aimed at increasing security and safety awareness among UN Women personnel. The position requires collaboration with various internal units and external partners to create effective communication materials that are gender-sensitive and promote a culture of security and safety across the organization.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for supporting the communication efforts of the UN Women Security and Safety Services Team. Key responsibilities include:
Liaising with appropriate units, divisions, and sections internally to facilitate communication efforts.
Collaborating with the UN Department of Safety and Security and UNSMS partners to develop robust security and safety communications products.
Supporting the development of gender-sensitive security information, coordination, and communication materials.
Assisting in the creation of communication campaigns and establishing cohesive channels of communication to reach and influence key audiences.
Developing effective presentations with a focus on visually accessible communications.
Utilizing communication and design tools to create various communication products, including flyers, presentations, graphics, videos, and multimedia materials.
Participating in the Inter-Agency Security Management System Strategic Communications Working Group.
Liaising with all interested parties regarding identified educational materials.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must have university studies in disciplines such as security risk management, criminal justice systems, security information management, international relations, media/communications, or other relevant subjects. Additionally, candidates must meet one of the following criteria: a) Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme or higher); b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as a bachelor’s degree or equivalent); c) Be enrolled in a mandatory national service programme of which the internship may form a part; d) Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within two years of graduation.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes university studies in relevant fields such as security risk management, criminal justice systems, security information management, international relations, or media/communications. Candidates should either be currently enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme or in the final year of their undergraduate studies. Recent graduates who meet the educational criteria are also eligible to apply, provided they start the internship within two years of graduation.
