Job Overview:
The Finance Associate position is integral to the Finance Branch of the Division for Management Services at UNFPA. This role involves managing global finance and accounting functions, providing guidance and oversight for financial management across various offices, including country, regional, and headquarters locations. The Finance Associate will work closely with the Accounting and Payments Unit (APU) and collaborate with other units within the Finance Branch. The position requires a proactive approach to financial management, ensuring compliance with UNFPA policies and procedures while supporting the execution of financial transactions and reporting. The Finance Associate will also play a key role in training and knowledge transfer, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of financial operations within the organization.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Partnerships, Knowledge Management, Communication, and Training: Actively participate in Finance Branch meetings, maintaining collaborative relationships with APU partners, including HQ units and field offices. Deliver financial training and facilitate knowledge transfer based on operational procedures.
  • Business Continuity Activities: Review payment requests for compliance with UNFPA policies, prepare supplier invoices in Quantum, and resolve invoice-related issues. Ensure timely execution of payments and monitor payment cycles.
  • Support and Guidance on Financial Management: Respond to Global Service Desk cases, providing guidance on Accounts Payable processes and supplier management.
  • Accounting Activities: Analyze and correct general ledger accounts related to payables, performing data correction activities during periodic and year-end closures.
  • Reporting and Information Management: Review system-generated reports for accuracy and completeness, preparing financial data for audits.
  • Business Process Efficiency: Analyze reports to identify payment delays, recommend process improvements, and ensure timely corrective actions.
  • Other Duties: Carry out additional responsibilities as assigned by supervisors or UNFPA leadership.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a valid G-4 visa acquired through employment within the UN system, United States citizenship, or valid United States permanent residency. The position requires completion of secondary education with experience in accounting. Candidates should have at least 6 years of finance-related work experience, particularly in accounts payable and general ledger maintenance. Knowledge of IPSAS or IFRS is advantageous, along with proficiency in spreadsheets, word processing, and computerized accounting systems, preferably Oracle Cloud. Strong written and oral communication skills are essential, as is the ability to work effectively under pressure with attention to detail.

Educational Background:
Completion of secondary education is required, with a focus on accounting or finance-related fields. Additional certifications or training in accounting principles and practices would be beneficial.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 6 years of relevant finance-related work experience, particularly in areas such as accounts payable and general ledger maintenance. Experience with international financial reporting standards (IPSAS or IFRS) is considered an asset, as is familiarity with computerized accounting systems, especially Oracle Cloud.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of other official UN languages, particularly French and/or Spanish, is desirable and would enhance a candidate's profile.
