Job Overview:
The Interpreter position is crucial for facilitating communication between Limited English Proficient (LEP) individuals and their service providers. This role involves providing in-person and/or remote interpretation services with a strong emphasis on accuracy, impartiality, and confidentiality. The Interpreter will engage in various activities, including professional interpretation in diverse settings such as clinics, hospitals, schools, community organizations, and government agencies. The position also requires the use of software to track assignments and work hours, as well as participation in training and assessments. The Interpreter may also support special projects and initiatives as needed, contributing to the overall mission of the IRC to positively impact the lives of individuals in need.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Interpreter include, but are not limited to:
  • Providing accurate, impartial, and confidential interpretation services to LEP individuals and service providers across various settings.
  • Rendering services in person, via telephone, videoconference, or other virtual means as required.
  • Tracking assignments and work hours using designated software to ensure accountability and efficiency.
  • Participating in training sessions and assessments to enhance skills and maintain high standards of service.
  • Supporting special projects and initiatives that align with the IRC's mission and goals.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the Interpreter Coordinator or other supervisory personnel.

Required Qualifications:
The required qualifications for the Interpreter position include:
  • A high school diploma is strongly preferred, indicating a foundational level of education.
  • An interpretation certification is preferred, demonstrating formal training and proficiency in interpretation skills.
  • Relevant professional interpretation experience is preferred, particularly in contexts involving refugee and/or immigrant populations, which is crucial for understanding the unique challenges faced by these communities.
  • Demonstrated skills in cultural sensitivity, enabling the Interpreter to build trust with clients, colleagues, and partners effectively.
  • Proficiency in English, both spoken and written, is essential for clear communication.
  • Spoken proficiency in Arabic is required, with knowledge of dialects such as Levantine, Maghrebi, Egyptian, and Sudanese being preferred.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in work products is critical to ensure high-quality interpretation services.
  • Basic computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Office, are necessary for tracking assignments and managing documentation.
  • Reliable transportation to appointment locations is required to fulfill the responsibilities of the role effectively.

Educational Background:
The educational background needed for the Interpreter position primarily includes a high school diploma, which is strongly preferred. Compensation for the position is set within a pay range of $20 - $20 per hour, applicable to US-based candidates.
