Job Overview:
The Senior Nuclear Safety Officer (Nuclear Site Safety) plays a crucial role in the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security at the IAEA. This position involves contributing to the planning and integration of various projects aimed at enhancing the safety of nuclear installations through effective site selection and hazard assessment. The officer will be responsible for coordinating a portfolio of projects that support the Division of Nuclear Installation Safety's objectives, which include establishing safety standards and providing technical support to member states. The role requires a combination of scientific expertise, project management skills, and the ability to lead complex technical reviews and missions. The officer will also serve as a subject matter expert, facilitating technical meetings and consultations to promote best practices in nuclear safety.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Nuclear Safety Officer will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including: organizing and leading teams of experts to enhance safety standards in site safety; coordinating IAEA activities related to site selection and hazard review; consulting with member states to implement safety peer reviews; identifying information requirements for nuclear safety information systems; providing expertise for the Incident Emergency System; and representing the IAEA in professional meetings and conferences. The officer will also be involved in developing and managing projects that aim to improve the safety effectiveness of nuclear installations, ensuring compliance with international safety standards and fostering collaboration among member states.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree in engineering (nuclear, structural, electrical, mechanical, chemical), physics, mathematics, or a closely related field. Alternatively, a university degree in engineering with an additional two years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree. The position requires a minimum of ten years of experience, including five years at a senior level and at least four years at the international level, specifically in site selection, evaluation, and hazard assessment for nuclear installations. Candidates should have experience applying nuclear safety principles and techniques to national and international projects, as well as experience in organizing and leading technical meetings and safety reviews.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree in a relevant field such as engineering, physics, or mathematics is essential for this position. Candidates with a bachelor's degree in engineering and additional relevant experience may also be considered. The educational background should provide a strong foundation in the technical aspects of nuclear safety and site assessment, enabling the officer to effectively contribute to the IAEA's objectives.

Experience:
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in nuclear safety, particularly in site selection and hazard assessment. A minimum of ten years of professional experience is required, with at least five years in a senior role and four years at the international level. Experience in applying nuclear safety standards and leading complex technical projects is crucial, as is the ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment and establish partnerships with various stakeholders.

Languages:
