Job Overview:
The internship program at the IAEA is designed to provide students and recent graduates with practical work experience that aligns with their academic studies or interests. Interns will have the opportunity to engage with the IAEA's work and the broader United Nations framework. The internship typically lasts between three months and one year, allowing interns to contribute to the IAEA's programs while gaining valuable insights into the workings of an international organization. Interns will specifically support the gamma-spectrometry laboratory at the Terrestrial Environmental Radiochemistry (TERC) Laboratory, which is part of the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications. This role involves performing measurements of environmental samples and assisting in quality assurance activities, thereby enhancing the intern's understanding of nuclear techniques and their applications in environmental protection and development.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be expected to assist in the commissioning of gamma-spectrometry instrumentation and evaluate analysis software at the TERC Laboratory. They will perform measurements of candidate reference materials, including two new IAEA reference materials, and contribute to the preparation of final technical reports. Additionally, interns will support proficiency test activities, which involve characterizing samples sent to participating laboratories. Quality assurance activities relevant to ISO17034 will also be part of their responsibilities. Finally, interns will be required to produce a presentation detailing all work undertaken during the internship, showcasing their contributions and learning outcomes.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a university degree in Physics or a related scientific discipline. They should demonstrate the ability to work effectively within a laboratory setting and undertake analytical tasks. Knowledge of radiometrology techniques, particularly gamma-spectrometry, is essential. Excellent written and spoken English is mandatory, while fluency in any other IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is considered an asset. Candidates must also provide two signed letters of recommendation with their application.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be at least 20 years of age and have completed a minimum of three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a first degree. They may apply up to one year after completing a bachelor's, master's, or doctorate degree. It is important to note that candidates who have previously participated in the IAEA's internship program are not eligible to apply.

Experience:
The internship is aimed at individuals who are either currently studying or have recently completed their studies in relevant fields. While specific prior work experience is not required, candidates should have a solid understanding of their academic discipline and be able to demonstrate their analytical skills through their studies or related projects.

Languages:
Proficiency in written and spoken English is essential for all candidates. Additionally, fluency in any of the IAEA's official languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is advantageous and may enhance a candidate's application.

Additional Notes:
The internship is offered for a duration of 12 months, providing a comprehensive experience within the IAEA. This position is classified as an internship, which typically does not offer a salary, but may provide other benefits such as exposure to international work environments and networking opportunities within the field of nuclear sciences. Candidates are encouraged to apply if they meet the eligibility criteria and are interested in contributing to the IAEA's mission.
