Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
UNICEF, established in 1946, is a United Nations agency responsible for providing humanitarian and developmental aid to children worldwide. With a mission to promote the rights of every child, UNICEF operates in over 190 countries, employing approximately 13,000 staff members. The organization focuses on equity, ensuring that all children, especially the most disadvantaged, have the opportunity to survive, develop, and reach their full potential. UNICEF's work is guided by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, emphasizing the importance of addressing inequities in health, education, and protection to foster sustainable growth and stability in nations.

Job Overview:
The Online Volunteer position is designed to support UNICEF's efforts in Mozambique, specifically in the development of a National Strategy for Children in Street Situations (CSR). This role involves collaborating with the Child Protection team and various stakeholders to analyze and consolidate data related to the needs assessment and strategy development process. The volunteer will engage in reviewing and organizing existing data sources, cleaning and structuring datasets, and analyzing data to identify trends and gaps affecting children living and/or working on the streets. The ultimate goal is to translate this data into actionable insights that will inform strategic priorities and interventions, ensuring that the needs of the most vulnerable children are addressed effectively.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Online Volunteer will undertake several key responsibilities, including:
  • Reviewing and organizing existing data sources, such as needs assessment findings, service mapping data, workshop and consultation notes, and secondary data from reports and studies.
  • Supporting data cleaning and structuring to ensure coherence and usability across various datasets.
  • Analyzing data to identify key trends and gaps, focusing on profiles of children in street situations, geographic disparities, access to essential services (education, health, protection, social protection), and key drivers of vulnerability such as poverty and family breakdown.
  • Developing clear analytical outputs, including summary briefs, tables, dashboards, and thematic insights aligned with strategic pillars.
  • Contributing to the structuring of the strategy by translating data into key messages and evidence-based priorities, and supporting the articulation of strategic axes and intervention areas.
  • Ensuring that the analysis incorporates a Leave No One Behind (LNOB) perspective, paying attention to factors such as gender, age, disability, and vulnerability.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the Online Volunteer position should possess strong analytical skills, with a background in data analysis and familiarity with child protection issues. Proficiency in data management tools and software is essential, along with the ability to synthesize complex information into clear and actionable insights. Strong communication skills are necessary to effectively collaborate with team members and stakeholders. Additionally, a commitment to UNICEF's mission and values, particularly in promoting equity and addressing the needs of disadvantaged children, is crucial.

Educational Background:
A degree in social sciences, public health, data science, or a related field is preferred for this position. Candidates with relevant coursework or experience in child protection, humanitarian work, or policy analysis will be given priority. A strong understanding of the challenges faced by children in street situations and the ability to apply evidence-based approaches to policy design are also important.

Experience:
While specific years of experience are not mandated, candidates should have some relevant experience in data analysis, research, or child protection systems. Experience working with vulnerable populations, particularly children, and familiarity with the humanitarian-development nexus programming will be advantageous. Previous volunteer or internship experience in similar roles will also be considered valuable.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as all analytical outputs and communications will be conducted in this language. Proficiency in Portuguese is highly desirable, given the local context of Mozambique and the need to engage with local stakeholders effectively. Knowledge of additional languages spoken in Mozambique may also be beneficial.

Additional Notes:
This is a volunteer position, and as such, it may not offer financial compensation. The role is expected to be part-time, allowing flexibility for the volunteer to manage their time effectively. The position is open to both national and international applicants, and the duration of the contract will be determined based on the needs of the project and the availability of the volunteer. The opportunity provides valuable experience in a national-level strategic process, contributing to evidence-based policy design and child protection systems.
