Job Overview:
The VNU (Volontaire des Nations Unies) will play a crucial role in strengthening climate resilience in the education sector in Madagascar. This position involves supporting the implementation and monitoring of programs related to climate, environment, adaptation, and sustainable development education. The VNU will work under the supervision of the Education Specialist - Adolescents and will contribute to the development and execution of a climate and environment strategy for UNICEF Madagascar's education section. The role is vital in integrating environmental education and climate change into the national education system, which has become a priority due to the country's vulnerability to climate impacts such as cyclones, floods, and droughts. The VNU will also assist in raising awareness and educating communities about sustainable practices and resilience-building measures.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The VNU will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of a climate and environment strategy for the education section of UNICEF Madagascar.
  • Supporting the execution of climate and environment activities and educational initiatives.
  • Participating in the documentation of practices, innovations, and results related to climate/environment interventions and education.
  • Providing logistical and administrative support for planning, technical meetings, and field missions.
  • Contributing to monthly reporting and the capitalization of activities.
  • Assisting in organizing workshops or awareness sessions on climate/environment and education with local partners.
  • Supporting the development or adaptation of planning, monitoring, or awareness tools.
  • Contributing to data analysis and the production of technical notes, framing documents, or guidelines.
  • Assisting Programme Officers – Field (POTs) with the implementation of field activities and strengthening decentralized structures concerning climate and environment. 1
  • Participating in coordination with technical partners, NGOs, UN sister agencies, or relevant ministries.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong commitment to the mission of UNICEF and demonstrate competencies such as care, respect, integrity, trust, responsibility, and sustainability. The ideal candidate should have a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders. Educational Background:

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 1-2 years of relevant experience in education, climate change, or environmental programs. Experience working with international organizations, NGOs, or in the field of education in developing countries is highly desirable. Familiarity with the challenges and opportunities in Madagascar's education sector, particularly regarding climate resilience, will be beneficial.

Languages:
Fluency in French is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication in Madagascar. Proficiency in English is also highly desirable, as it may be necessary for reporting and collaboration with international partners. Knowledge of Malagasy would be an asset, enhancing communication with local communities.

The position is based in Antananarivo, Madagascar, where UNICEF has functional offices and experienced national and international staff. Field missions may require travel to more remote areas with limited access to certain services.
