Job Overview: The Fellow position is primarily focused on developing and implementing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) components within the Future Tech Leaders (FTL) Programme in Brazil. This initiative aims to cultivate a new generation of young tech specialists in Brazil, particularly in AI-led space technologies. The Fellow will be responsible for designing the curriculum for GIS-related modules, ensuring that the educational content aligns with the goals of the initiative. Additionally, the Fellow will deliver GIS training sessions, contribute to ongoing research efforts, and support the GIS team at the SDG AI Lab. The role requires a strong commitment to knowledge management and effective information sharing within the framework of ICPSD's mandate.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Fellow will assist in the following duties and responsibilities:
Support Future Tech Leaders Brazil training components on GIS, including planning and preparing materials for learning collaboratives, hosting office hours for learners, facilitating discussions, and monitoring learner progress (50% of time).
Support Frontier Tech Leaders & Future Tech Leaders Portuguese speaking implementations by organizing community events and engaging Portuguese speaking participants (30% of time).
Develop and implement digital solutions for SDGs utilizing GIS, including geospatial data processing, creating maps and infographics, and managing GIS project implementation (10% of time).
Provide support to the Chief Technical Advisor for AI, Digital Transformation, and Skills as required (10% of time).
Required Qualifications: Candidates must meet one of the following educational requirements: currently enrolled in a postgraduate program (Master’s or higher) in fields such as Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Data Science, Geodesics, Cartography, Computer Science, Engineering, or similar. Strong programming skills, preferably in Python, and practical experience in implementing automated workflows with geodata are essential. Proven experience with GIS software such as QGIS or ArcGIS is required, along with familiarity with Geoserver, PostGIS, and other relational databases. Proficiency in additional programming languages like R, SQL, or JavaScript is an asset.
Educational Background: Candidates must be currently enrolled in a postgraduate program, such as a Master’s program or higher, in relevant fields such as Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Data Science, Geodesics, Cartography, Computer Science, Engineering, or similar. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of GIS and its applications in development.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have practical experience in implementing automated workflows with geodata and scripting, particularly with tools like Jupyter Notebook. Proven experience with GIS software and libraries is essential, as well as familiarity with geospatial data processing and analysis techniques. Experience in teaching or training is also beneficial, particularly in a remote learning environment.
Languages: Fluency in Portuguese and English with excellent reading and writing skills is required. Proficiency in an additional UN language other than English is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate effectively in a diverse environment.
