Job Overview: The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Associate Programme Management Officer in the Strategic Planning Reporting and Impact Section of UNEP's Policy and Programme Division. The role involves collecting, cleaning, and managing quantitative data from various international and national statistical sources relevant to UNEP's environmental impact indicators. The intern will be responsible for building and analyzing panel datasets and applying statistical methods to estimate the causal impacts of UNEP interventions. Additionally, the intern will conduct geospatial analysis using satellite-derived environmental data to support retrospective impact assessments of UNEP projects. This position requires a proactive approach to contribute to portfolio-level aggregation and synthesis of project-level impact estimates, drafting analytical notes, and supporting structured workshops and consultations with UNEP project managers. The intern will also assist in preparing presentations and briefings for UNEP senior leadership and intergovernmental processes, providing flexible support to the Directorate as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern's duties will include:
Collecting, cleaning, and managing quantitative data from international and national statistical sources relevant to UNEP's environmental impact indicators.
Building and analyzing panel datasets and applying quasi-experimental and statistical methods to estimate causal impacts of UNEP interventions.
Conducting geospatial analysis using satellite-derived environmental data to support retrospective impact assessments of UNEP projects.
Contributing to portfolio-level aggregation and synthesis of project-level impact estimates, including quantitative meta-analysis.
Drafting analytical notes, methodology documents, indicator guidance, and sections of formal reports for review by senior management and governing bodies.
Supporting the facilitation of structured workshops and consultations with UNEP project managers, including preparation of materials, data instruments, and documentation.
Contributing to presentations, briefings, and talking points for UNEP senior leadership and intergovernmental processes.
Providing flexible and ad hoc support to the Directorate in various duties as required and performing any other related tasks assigned by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), or (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). A university degree in Economics, International Relations, International Development, Law, Environmental Science, or a related field with coursework in areas such as impact measurement, international development policy, or geospatial analysis is preferred. While professional work experience is not required, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Applicants must have a strong knowledge of standard software applications including MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS SharePoint, and MS Outlook, as well as experience with GIS tools or cloud-based platforms for processing and analyzing spatial and satellite environmental data.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes either being enrolled in or having completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) or being enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). A degree in a relevant field such as Economics, International Relations, International Development, Law, Environmental Science, or related areas is preferred, especially with coursework in impact measurement or geospatial analysis.
Experience: While applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience, it is essential that they have a field of study closely related to the internship they are applying for. Experience with GIS tools or cloud-based platforms for processing and analyzing spatial and satellite environmental data is advantageous. Additionally, experience in producing analytical documents, policy briefs, or academic writing will be beneficial for this role.
Languages: Fluency in English is required for this position, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Proficiency in French is considered a good asset but is not mandatory.
