Job Overview:
The Project Specialist position is located within UNEP’s Climate Change Adaptation Unit (CCAU) in the Adaptation and Resilience Branch of the Climate Change Division. The primary objective of this role is to manage a portion of UNEP's portfolio of climate change adaptation projects funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), Adaptation Fund (AF), and Green Climate Fund (GCF) in Asia. The Project Specialist will be responsible for internalizing new approved projects, responding to queries from executing partners, reviewing progress and technical reports, and providing adaptive management to ensure the successful implementation of projects. This role requires close collaboration with Project Management Assistants and Finance Assistants to ensure that projects are executed effectively and in alignment with UNEP's strategic goals.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Project Specialist include guiding Programme Management Assistants in developing legal agreements for new projects and extensions, preparing documents for UNEP project internalization, maintaining communication with Project Management Units (PMUs) at Executing Agencies, reviewing key technical deliverables, participating in Project Steering Committee meetings, preparing project supervision plans, and reviewing expenditure reports. The Project Specialist will also prepare and send progress report templates to Executing Agencies, hold meetings to ensure timely completion of reports, respond to GEF review comments, and provide detailed guidance notes summarizing project status and tasks. Travel may be required for project monitoring and planning missions as determined by the Portfolio Manager.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree in sustainable development, international development, environmental sciences, development studies, or a related field. A first-level degree with an additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree. Additionally, a minimum of five years of experience in managing projects related to climate change adaptation, livelihoods, environment, or development is required. Experience working with national governments in Asia and familiarity with private sector financing instruments are also essential. Experience with GEF, GCF, Adaptation Fund, or UNEP projects is considered an asset.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree in relevant fields such as sustainable development, international development, environmental sciences, or development studies. Candidates with a first-level degree and additional qualifying experience may also be considered. This educational foundation is crucial for understanding the complexities of climate change adaptation and the associated project management responsibilities.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of five years of relevant experience in managing projects that focus on climate change adaptation, environmental issues, or development initiatives. Candidates should have a proven track record of working with national governments in Asia, which is critical for understanding regional challenges and opportunities. Experience with private sector financing mechanisms is also necessary, as the role involves innovative financing approaches for adaptation projects.

Languages:
