Job Overview: The consultancy position involves conducting a midline household survey as part of the CGIAR Multifunctional Landscapes Science Program. This quantitative study aims to collect updated data on agricultural practices, household economic outcomes, food consumption, labor allocation, gender roles, and resilience to shocks. The midline survey will revisit approximately 1,000 households previously interviewed during the baseline survey, generating panel data for rigorous impact evaluation. The selected firm will be responsible for coordinating and executing the survey, which will include in-person interviews lasting 90 to 120 minutes, utilizing computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI) methods. The work will be conducted in collaboration with the CGIAR team in Kenya, with all data collection to be completed by June 1, 2026.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the survey implementer include:
Survey Preparation: Review and adapt the existing baseline CAPI instrument for midline implementation, translate the survey instrument into relevant local languages, update and test the CAPI program, and prepare a panel tracking protocol using baseline household identifiers.
Permits and Approvals: Obtain all necessary research permits, ethics approvals, and local authorizations.
Enumerator Recruitment and Training: Recruit qualified enumerators with relevant language skills, conduct a five-day training program covering panel tracking procedures, handling respondent attrition, and the use of CAPI tools, and conduct pilot testing of the survey instruments.
Fieldwork Implementation: Track and re-interview baseline households, maintain detailed logs of recontacted households and non-response cases, develop a detailed fieldwork schedule, and provide regular progress updates to IFPRI.
Data Quality Assurance: Develop and implement protocols for data quality checks, share monitoring data with IFPRI, and participate in coordination meetings.
Data Management and Delivery: Upload raw CAPI data regularly, conduct data cleaning, and provide raw and cleaned datasets in Stata format.
Reporting: Submit a fieldwork report summarizing survey implementation, attrition analysis, data quality issues, and lessons learned.
Required Qualifications: The required qualifications for this position include:
Demonstrated experience conducting panel household surveys in Kenya.
Proven experience in conducting survey-related trainings.
Strong experience in tracking respondents over time and managing attrition.
Expert knowledge of local context and languages in the target areas.
Experience in building trust and good relations with village leaders and communities.
Strong program management skills and experience in coordinating large field teams.
Excellent computer skills and proficiency in using CAPI and statistical software packages.
Experience in obtaining local ethics review and permits.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a degree in social sciences, statistics, or a related field. Advanced degrees or specialized training in survey methodology or data analysis are preferred, as they provide a strong foundation for conducting rigorous quantitative research.
Experience: The level of experience needed for this position includes a minimum of five years of relevant experience in conducting household surveys, particularly in the context of agricultural or socio-economic research. Experience in managing field teams and ensuring data quality is essential, as is familiarity with the local context and communities in Kenya.
Languages: Mandatory languages for this position include English and relevant local languages spoken in the target areas of Kisumu and Vihiga. Proficiency in both written and spoken forms is essential for effective communication with respondents and stakeholders. Additional languages are considered a plus, as they may enhance the ability to engage with diverse communities.
