Job Overview: The Field Coordinator (FC) represents Solidarités International in the field and is responsible for proposing strategies that are adapted to the humanitarian and geopolitical context. The FC ensures that projects are implemented in accordance with the organization’s charter and procedures. This role involves coordinating teams, overseeing their safety, managing material and financial resources, and supervising recruitment and staff well-being. The FC also liaises with local authorities, NGOs, and other humanitarian actors, ensuring effective information flow and maintaining high-quality reporting. Additionally, the FC monitors the local context to guide programs, ensuring their relevance and coherence, and contributes to reports, donor communications, and funding applications while promoting the ethics and values of Solidarités International. The position requires a proactive approach to address the challenges posed by active conflict in the region, ensuring that security rules are strictly observed and continuously updated to adapt to evolving threats.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Field Coordinator has a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including but not limited to: representing SI in the field and ensuring that all project activities align with the organization’s mission and values; coordinating and managing field teams, ensuring their safety and well-being; overseeing the implementation of project activities based on assessments and preparatory notes; mapping and creating synergies with other actors in the area; providing guidance to the team in accordance with SI standard procedures; ensuring compliance with security protocols and continuously monitoring the security situation; managing material and financial resources effectively; supervising recruitment processes and supporting staff development; maintaining high-quality reporting and communication with stakeholders; and contributing to the development of project proposals and funding applications. The FC is also expected to adapt strategies based on the evolving humanitarian context and to ensure that the organization’s interventions remain relevant and effective.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a master’s degree or equivalent field experience in Humanitarian Action, International Development, Social Sciences, Project Management, or a related field. Additionally, candidates should have at least 5 years of experience in the humanitarian sector, with 3 to 4 years in a similar position. Relevant management skills are essential, including operation and team management, leadership, communication, problem-solving, decision-making, time management, adaptability, and organizational abilities. A strong understanding of finance and logistics processes is also required. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to work under pressure in challenging and sometimes insecure environments, with cultural sensitivity and a strong commitment to humanitarian principles and safeguarding policies.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a master’s degree in a relevant field such as Humanitarian Action, International Development, Social Sciences, Project Management, or a related discipline. Equivalent field experience may also be considered in lieu of formal education. The emphasis is on having a strong theoretical foundation as well as practical skills applicable to the humanitarian sector.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 5 years of experience in the humanitarian sector, with at least 3 to 4 years in a similar role. This experience should include operational management, team leadership, and direct involvement in project implementation in challenging environments. Candidates should have a proven track record of successfully managing teams and projects, as well as navigating complex humanitarian contexts.
Languages: Fluency in written and spoken English is essential for this position. Knowledge of local languages, particularly Amharic, is considered a strong asset and will enhance communication with local stakeholders and communities. Proficiency in additional languages may also be beneficial, depending on the specific context of the projects being implemented.
Additional Notes: This position is offered on a short-term contract basis, with an expected duration of 6 months. The role is based in the Amhara region of Ethiopia, specifically in Motta, and may involve travel to other areas as needed. The compensation package includes a starting salary of EUR 3080 gross per month, which consists of a base salary of EUR 2800 plus a 10% annual leave allowance paid monthly. Additionally, a monthly Per Diem of USD 400 is provided. SI covers accommodation costs and travel expenses between the expatriate's country of origin and the place of assignment. The organization implements a system of alternation between work and time off, allowing for breaks every three months, with a USD 850 break allowance. Expatriates benefit from a comprehensive insurance package that covers healthcare expenses, including medical, surgical, dental, and repatriation costs. Living conditions include shared guesthouse accommodations, with limited social life and dining options in the project area.
