Job Posting Organization: The ITER Organization is an international nuclear fusion research and engineering project, which aims to demonstrate the feasibility of fusion as a large-scale and carbon-free source of energy. Established in 2007, ITER is a collaboration among 35 nations, including the European Union, the United States, China, India, Japan, South Korea, and Russia. The organization employs thousands of scientists, engineers, and support staff from around the world, working together to advance the field of fusion energy. The ITER project is located in Cadarache, France, and is expected to play a crucial role in the future of energy production, contributing to global efforts to combat climate change and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
Job Overview: The Postgraduate Program at the ITER Organization is designed for early-career professionals who have recently completed their postgraduate studies and are eager to gain practical experience in a dynamic international environment. This program provides an opportunity to work on significant projects related to fusion energy, specifically in the field of electrical engineering. As a postgraduate electrical engineer, you will be involved in various technical activities that are essential to the engineering lifecycle, including specification, design, manufacturing supervision, construction, testing, commissioning, and system integration of electrical components and systems. You will work under the guidance of experienced professionals, allowing you to develop your technical skills and gain valuable insights into the engineering processes that drive the ITER project. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about engineering and are looking to make a meaningful contribution to a groundbreaking energy initiative.
Duties and Responsibilities: As a postgraduate electrical engineer, your key duties and responsibilities will include providing engineering design input to support the development of technical specifications and associated packages for the tender and procurement of electrical components and systems. You will witness manufacturing and factory acceptance tests to ensure compliance with quality requirements and draft associated reports. Additionally, you will support the testing, commissioning, and Site Acceptance Tests (SATs), which will involve drafting commissioning plans and testing procedures. You will also be responsible for performing infield operations, troubleshooting, and maintenance of electrical components and systems. It is important to note that job descriptions may not be exhaustive, and you may be required to undertake other duties that align with your primary responsibilities.
Required Qualifications: To be considered for this position, candidates must possess a Master’s degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate knowledge in one or more areas of electrical power distribution, large current conversion, DC switching and transmission, high voltage DC power supply, and electromagnetic calculation and analysis. Familiarity with commercial software such as MATLAB/Simulink, ETAP, PSIM, ANSYS, and COMSOL Multiphysics is also required, along with the ability to produce analysis reports and calculation notes. Experience in design, procurement, manufacturing, installation, and infield troubleshooting of electrical components and/or systems is advantageous. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, are essential for this role.
Educational Background: Candidates must have a Master’s degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering. This educational background is crucial as it provides the foundational knowledge and technical expertise required to succeed in the role of a postgraduate electrical engineer at the ITER Organization. The program is tailored for recent graduates who are looking to apply their academic knowledge in a practical setting and gain hands-on experience in the field of electrical engineering.
Experience: The position is aimed at early-career professionals, and while prior experience is not mandatory, any relevant internships or practical experiences in electrical engineering will be considered advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate a willingness to learn and adapt to new challenges in a fast-paced, international environment. The ITER Organization values diverse experiences and encourages applicants from various backgrounds to apply, as long as they meet the educational requirements and possess the necessary skills.
Languages: Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is mandatory for this position. Given the international nature of the ITER Organization, proficiency in additional languages may be considered a plus, although it is not explicitly required for this role. Strong communication skills in English are essential for effective collaboration with colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Additional Notes: The contract duration for this position is two years, providing a structured timeframe for professional development and contribution to the ITER project. The role is classified at the P1 job grade, and candidates should be prepared for the possibility of working outside standard hours, including nights, weekends, and public holidays, depending on project needs. A valid driving license in France is required for staff expected to perform on-call or shift work, as no commuting vehicle will be provided by the ITER Organization. The ITER Organization is committed to fostering a collaborative and respectful work environment, guided by its CARE values: Collaboration, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence.
