The organization operates in over 40 countries and 29 U.S. cities, focusing on responding to the world's most severe humanitarian crises. The IRC's mission is to restore health, safety, education, economic wellbeing, and power to individuals affected by conflict and disaster. With a workforce dedicated to delivering lasting impact, the IRC aims to help millions regain control of their futures and strengthen their communities, embodying a force for humanity.

Job Overview:
The Small Business Counselor position is situated within the IRC’s Center for Financial Opportunity (CFO), which is dedicated to assisting newly arrived refugees and low-income individuals in achieving self-sufficiency through employment and financial management. The role involves supporting the development of the IRC Small Business Development Program, particularly focusing on the Small Business Administration Community Navigator Program and Small Business Development Center grants. The counselor will provide one-on-one business advising on various topics such as startup assistance, financial literacy, and business management. This position is crucial for fostering economic recovery in underserved communities by leveraging partnerships with local organizations to deliver targeted outreach and assistance.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Small Business Counselor will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including: assisting in outreach and recruitment of program participants; screening and assessing interested residents for eligibility; connecting with ethnic community-based organizations (ECBOs) to coordinate technical assistance and training; leading training programs on marketing, financial literacy, and best business practices; performing data entry in systems like Neoserra, SalesForce, and ETO; maintaining accurate records for program eligibility and reporting; providing one-on-one business counseling; assisting entrepreneurs with loan applications and business plans; underwriting and packaging loan applications; conducting individual case management and loan collections; facilitating referrals to outside service providers; planning and coordinating training activities; developing outreach materials; and attending regular meetings with IRC staff and volunteers.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, along with the ability to learn custom software used by the SBDC. Experience with customer relationship management systems such as Salesforce, ETO, and Neoserra is preferred. Applicants should be familiar with assessing business training needs and analyzing business-related materials, including financial reports and marketing plans. A minimum of an undergraduate degree in Business Administration, Finance, Public Administration, or a related field is required, although business experience may substitute for formal education. Additionally, candidates should have at least 2 years of experience in small business development counseling and training, with experience in the non-profit sector being strongly preferred.

Educational Background:
The educational requirement for this position includes an undergraduate degree in Business Administration, Finance, Public Administration, or a related field. However, candidates with substantial business experience may be considered in lieu of formal education. This flexibility allows for a broader range of applicants who may have practical experience that aligns with the job's responsibilities.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 2 years of experience in small business development counseling and training. Candidates with experience operating a small business may also be considered. Prior experience working with immigrant and refugee entrepreneurs is strongly desired, as it aligns with the IRC's mission to support underserved communities. Experience in the non-profit sector is also highly preferred, as it indicates familiarity with the unique challenges and opportunities within this field.

Languages:
Proficiency in Spanish is mandatory for this position, as it will facilitate communication with a diverse clientele. While Spanish is essential, additional language skills may be considered advantageous, particularly if they align with the communities served by the IRC.

Additional Notes:
This position operates in a hybrid work environment, combining standard office work with remote and field engagement. Regular travel within the service delivery area is required, and candidates must have access to a reliable vehicle. The office hours are Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with occasional evening or weekend hours as needed. The compensation for this role ranges from $25.46 to $27.34 per hour, depending on various factors such as labor market conditions, job type, and individual candidate experience. The IRC offers a comprehensive benefits package, including paid time off, medical and dental insurance, a retirement savings plan, and an Employee Assistance Program.
