Job Overview: The Associate Director, Technical will play a pivotal role in overseeing the design and implementation of the STRengthening Infectious Disease DEtection Systems (STRIDES) project aimed at enhancing global healthsecurity" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security in Kenya. This position requires the establishment and continual refinement of technical frameworks, approaches, tools, and activities in alignment with relevant normative guidelines and technical standards. The Associate Director will be responsible for directing the technical development and implementation processes of the STRIDES project, ensuring that all technical deliverables are completed on schedule, within budget, and meet or exceed quality standards. The role also involves supervising and mentoring technical staff, contributing to global thought leadership initiatives in Global Health Security, and ensuring that project activities are conducted in close coordination with the Government of Kenya and other stakeholders.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Associate Director will serve as the technical lead for the STRIDES project, providing oversight and direction to ensure that project milestones and targets are met. Responsibilities include liaising with counterparts within the Kenya health system, overseeing technical capacity strengthening of project subrecipients, ensuring compliance with donor requirements, and managing a team to achieve project goals. The role also involves organizing project activities, developing high-quality technical deliverables, responding to donor and government inquiries, and supporting the professional development of direct reports. The Associate Director will design, monitor, and evaluate recruitment and supervision activities, contribute to strategic goals, and perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess comprehensive technical knowledge of project management theories, concepts, and practices, with an in-depth understanding of infectious disease preparedness and response principles. Familiarity with the Kenya public health sector and donor-funded programs is essential, along with demonstrated project and technical leadership skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills, organizational and analytical skills, and the ability to motivate and influence others are critical for success in this role.
Educational Background: A Master’s degree or its international equivalent in Health or a related field is required. A Medical Degree (MBBS/MBChB or MD) with a Master’s Degree is strongly preferred, indicating a high level of expertise in the relevant field.
Experience: Typically, candidates should have at least 10 years of relevant technical/project management experience, including a minimum of 3 years in leadership and line management roles. Experience with the design and implementation of innovative technical support to local entities and frontline service delivery teams is crucial, as is knowledge of Global Health Security projects. Prior experience working in a non-governmental organization (NGO) and familiarity with USG contracts are advantageous.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, with excellent reading, writing, and speaking skills. Additional language skills may be beneficial but are not specified as mandatory.
Additional Notes: The position is expected to require travel of more than 25%. The anticipated salary range for this role is KES 6,000,000 - 9,000,000 annually, depending on factors such as relevant experience and education.
