The intern will report directly to the Programme Management Officer (Statistician) of the section. The primary functions of this internship include processing and analyzing environmental data and statistics, supporting the development of metadata for environmental indicators, and assisting in data collection on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicators under UNEP custodianship. The intern will also engage in reviewing statistical publications, conducting statistical methodological research, and organizing meetings with partners both within and outside UNEP. Additionally, the intern will assist in creating project documentation repositories, publishing materials on UNEP's official websites, and developing communication and outreach materials. The role is designed to provide practical experience in data analytics and environmental statistics, contributing to UNEP's mission of promoting sustainable development and environmental protection.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern's daily responsibilities may include:
Processing and analyzing available environmental data and statistics to derive meaningful insights.
Supporting the development and preparation of metadata for environmental indicators, ensuring accuracy and relevance.
Assisting in the collection of data related to SDG indicators for which UNEP is responsible, contributing to global monitoring efforts.
Reviewing and analyzing statistical publications to inform ongoing projects and research.
Conducting statistical methodological research to enhance the quality and reliability of data analysis.
Organizing and supporting meetings with various stakeholders, including partners from different organizations and sectors.
Assisting in the creation and maintenance of project documentation repositories to ensure easy access to information.
Helping to publish materials on UNEP's official websites, enhancing the visibility of UNEP's work.

Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: a) Be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher). b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). c) Have graduated with a university degree and must commence the internship within one year of graduation. Additionally, applicants should be computer literate in standard software applications and demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations, along with a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. Candidates should also exhibit the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs, showing a willingness to understand and tolerate differing opinions and views.
Educational Background: The preferred fields of study for applicants include statistics, sociology, environmental economics, environmental assessments, environmental monitoring, data science, or another related field.
