Job Overview: The Protection Specialist position is crucial for the technical development of the Protection from Violence (PfV) Core Competency (CC) within NRC's operations in Sudan. This role encompasses strategic direction, quality assurance, and the implementation of the CC strategy. The Protection Specialist will be responsible for mentoring and training staff to enhance their technical capacities in protection from violence. Key objectives include developing a comprehensive strategy aligned with regional and global priorities, contributing to fundraising efforts, ensuring compliance with contractual commitments, and providing technical direction and support for project implementation. The role also involves representing NRC in relevant working groups and promoting the rights of refugees and host communities in accordance with the advocacy strategy.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Protection Specialist will oversee the protection from violence team, providing training, guidance, and mentoring to ensure effective monitoring, analysis, and advocacy activities. Responsibilities include analyzing data from various sources to identify key protection trends and risks, and how these interact with NRC's activities in Sudan. The Specialist will work closely with the Head of Program (HoP) and Regional Protection Adviser to develop tools and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for quality assurance in line with Protection Information Management (PIM) principles. Additionally, the role requires contextualizing standards and modalities to local needs, strengthening area-based coordination mechanisms, and ensuring strategic local partnerships are established.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a minimum of 4 years of experience in a senior-level project implementation role within a humanitarian or recovery context. A Master's degree in a related field such as law" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">international law, international development, or social sciences is desirable; however, candidates with a Bachelor's degree may be considered if they have significantly more relevant work experience. Strong knowledge of global protection standards and humanitarian principles is essential, along with demonstrated experience in developing technical standards for protection from violence programming. Candidates should also have documented results related to the responsibilities of the position and a solid understanding of refugee crisis contexts.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Master's degree in a relevant field such as international law, international development, or social sciences. Candidates with a Bachelor's degree may be considered if they have extensive relevant work experience that exceeds the minimum requirement of 4 years. This educational foundation is critical for understanding the complexities of protection issues and the legal frameworks that govern humanitarian assistance.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 4 years of experience in a senior-level project implementation role within a humanitarian or recovery context. Candidates should have experience managing complex protection programs, including implementation, program development, fundraising, and budget development. Experience with start-up operations and the design and delivery of team capacity strengthening initiatives, including remote coaching and mentoring, is also advantageous.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset, particularly if they are relevant to the local context in Sudan. Proficiency in local languages can enhance communication and engagement with affected communities.
Additional Notes: The duty station for this position is Port Sudan, Sudan, with a salary grade of 9 on NRC’s international salary scale. The contract duration is fixed for one year, subject to renewal based on performance and funding availability. The role may require travel up to 40% of the time.
