Job Overview:
The Publishing Production Officer will play a crucial role in the Open Research Europe (ORE) platform, which is set to be hosted at CERN. This position involves supporting the Production Manager in managing the entire article production workflow, which includes pre-publication checks and final publication processes. The officer will be expected to contribute to the coordination of the full production workflow, ensuring a smooth transition from editorial to production phases. This role requires effective communication with external providers and collaboration with the Production Manager and Editorial Coordinator. The officer will also be responsible for managing article schedules, manuscript tracking using Open Journal Systems (OJS), and author communications. Additionally, maintaining documentation, identifying bottlenecks, and suggesting process improvements will be key functions of this position.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Publishing Production Officer include:
  • Coordinating the full production workflow from pre-publication to final version, ensuring all steps are executed efficiently.
  • Collaborating closely with the Production Manager and Editorial Coordinator to facilitate a seamless editorial-to-production transition.
  • Communicating effectively with external providers to ensure all production needs are met.
  • Managing article schedules and manuscript tracking through the OJS platform, ensuring timely progress and communication with authors.
  • Maintaining comprehensive documentation of the production process and identifying any bottlenecks that may arise.
  • Suggesting and implementing process improvements to enhance the efficiency and quality of the production workflow.
  • Participating in team meetings and contributing to discussions on production strategies and improvements.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a maximum of 2 years of experience in scholarly publishing or scholarly communication, with a focus on production, operational workflows, or editorial operations. Hands-on experience with the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform, particularly in workflow configuration and management, is considered an advantage. Familiarity with Publish-Review-Curate models is also beneficial. The ideal candidate should demonstrate strong skills in publishing, quality management, process analysis, and improvement, as well as attention to detail and effective teamwork capabilities. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential, along with a commitment to achieving results and solving problems efficiently.

Educational Background:
Applicants must hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Publishing or a related field. It is important to note that applicants without a university degree are not eligible for this position, nor are those who hold a PhD. The educational background should align with the requirements of the role, emphasizing the importance of a solid foundation in publishing principles and practices.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in the field of Publishing or a related area. This experience should ideally encompass aspects of scholarly publishing, production workflows, or editorial operations, providing the candidate with a practical understanding of the industry and its challenges.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this position. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate a commitment to learning French, which is considered a valuable asset for effective communication within the organization and with external partners.
