Job Overview: The position of Database Services Engineer within CERN's Database and Analytics group involves operating and supporting the Database on Demand (DBOD) service, which is utilized by various IT services and across CERN's experimental programs. The DBOD service manages over a thousand instances of MySQL, PostgreSQL, and InfluxDB, providing essential administrative functionalities such as configuration management, monitoring, backup and recovery, replication, and ensuring high availability. As an early-career professional, you will be expected to contribute to the administration of these database instances, participate in the evolution of the user interface, and assist in service configuration and architecture design. Your role will also encompass software development tasks using Python, bash, and Angular, alongside operations tasks that ensure the performance, availability, and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security of the systems.
Duties and Responsibilities: As a Database Services Engineer, your responsibilities will include:
Administering the database instances hosted in the DBOD service.
Participating in the design and evolution of the user interface based on Angular and Flask.
Assisting in service configuration and architecture design, including database upgrades and patch campaigns.
Working on hardware migrations and monitoring system health and performance to ensure optimal performance and security.
Advising users and collaborating with the team on service enhancements, providing technical mentorship and cross-training to peers.
Engaging in both operations tasks and software development, utilizing open-source software and gaining experience with CERN's IT infrastructure stack.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess experience working with MySQL, PostgreSQL, or TimescaleDB databases, along with proficiency in SQL, Unix shell scripting, and Python. A solid understanding of the Linux operating system and service administration tools like Puppet is essential. Additionally, experience in monitoring system health and performance indicators, as well as familiarity with Rundeck automation or orchestration tools, is required. Candidates should also have familiarity with large-scale and high-availability database environments, proficiency with Angular and Flask, and knowledge of containerization/container orchestration and the ELK stack.
Educational Background: Applicants must hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field. Candidates without a university degree are not eligible, and those with a PhD are also not eligible for this position. The maximum professional experience since graduation should not exceed two years by the application deadline.
Experience: The position requires a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in a relevant field. This is aimed at early-career professionals who are looking to develop their skills and gain experience in a dynamic research environment.
