Job Overview:
The Electromechanical Technician position at CERN involves participating in the fabrication and assembly of a variety of electronic and opto-electronic test systems that are essential for evaluating component performance. The role requires hands-on experience in mechanical parts manufacturing and a basic understanding of compact CNC machines. The technician will be responsible for manufacturing parts using various machines in the mechanical workshop, including CNC routers, milling machines, lathes, and drill presses. Additionally, the technician will contribute to building wiring harnesses that connect devices to test systems, particularly in demanding environments such as radiation test facilities. The position also includes assisting in assembling and testing large-scale setups, which is crucial for the successful operation of CERN's research activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Electromechanical Technician include:
  • Using machine tools to create mechanical parts for test setups.
  • Assembling wiring and fiber harnesses.
  • Soldering electronic components onto printed circuit boards (PCBs).
  • Designing simple PCBs after receiving necessary training.
  • Carrying out testing of cabling harnesses and assembled electronic circuits using a range of laboratory instruments.
  • Collaborating effectively within multi-disciplinary teams to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Maintaining a safe and organized work environment, particularly when working in radiation areas and underground installations.
  • Adhering to CERN's safety protocols and guidelines during all tasks.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess hands-on experience in mechanical parts manufacturing and a basic understanding of compact CNC machines. Familiarity with electronic board assembly, cable and wiring fabrication is essential. Applicants should have experience in assembly, wiring, and testing of electromechanical assemblies. The ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and electronic schematics is crucial, as is the capability to operate conventional machine tools. Effective collaboration within multi-disciplinary teams is expected, along with a commitment to learning French in addition to spoken and written English.

Educational Background:
The minimum educational requirement for this position is a general secondary education diploma. Candidates must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and should have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in a relevant field such as Technician in Mechatronic, Mechanical Engineering, or Electronics. Applicants with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree are not eligible for this position.

The position requires a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation. A valid driving license is required, and the technician may be required to work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as needed by the organization. The compensation includes a monthly stipend of 4687 Swiss Francs (tax-free), 30 days of paid leave per year, and comprehensive health insurance coverage for the employee and their family.
