Job Overview:
The position of Computing Engineer at CERN involves contributing to the administration, operation, support, and development of Geographic Information System (GIS) applications. This includes creating web interfaces to share geospatial information and being part of the Geomatics team responsible for measuring, collecting, and managing geospatial data related to CERN's infrastructure and equipment. The role requires collaboration with Future Collider Studies, such as the FCC and Muon Collider, to ensure the reliability and continuous improvement of dedicated GIS applications. The successful candidate will implement additional developments and enhancements to current web applications, maintain and support existing GIS web applications for both CERN and external users, and perform computing tasks related to GIS infrastructure and databases. This position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about geospatial data and its applications in a scientific context.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Computing Engineer include:
  • Collaborating with Future Collider Studies to ensure the reliability of GIS applications.
  • Implementing developments and enhancements to existing web applications.
  • Maintaining and supporting existing GIS web applications for CERN and external users.
  • Performing computing tasks related to GIS infrastructure and databases.
  • Developing tools and scripts related to geospatial information and associated databases.
  • Engaging in continuous learning and improvement of GIS applications and technologies.
  • Working autonomously while also being a proactive team member.
  • Ensuring high standards of quality and attention to detail in all tasks.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must have initial experience in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), particularly with the ESRI suite, and in managing geospatial data related to infrastructure and equipment. They should also have initial experience in the development and maintenance of web-based GIS applications, as well as in developing tools and scripts related to geospatial information and associated databases. Strong foundations in GIS software, ideally the ESRI suite (ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Enterprise), and programming skills in Python and JavaScript/TypeScript are essential. Practical knowledge of web technologies, including JavaScript, HTML5, CSS, and web services (SOAP/REST) for system integration, along with experience using version control systems (Git), is also required.

Educational Background:
The position requires candidates to have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Geomatics, GIS, computing, or a related field. Applicants without a university degree are not eligible, and those with a PhD are also not eligible for this position. Candidates should have graduated within the last two years to meet the eligibility criteria.

Experience:
Candidates should have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in the relevant fields of Geomatics, GIS, or computing. This experience should be demonstrated through previous roles or projects that align with the responsibilities of the Computing Engineer position.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the basics of the other language. This bilingual requirement is essential for effective communication within the diverse CERN community.

Additional Notes:
The contract duration for this position is 24 months, with a possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the job is fully onsite. The target start date for the position is June 1, 202

The compensation includes a monthly stipend ranging from 5,266 to 5,793 Swiss Francs, which is tax-free, along with 30 days of paid leave per year and additional benefits such as comprehensive health insurance, family allowances, and a relocation package depending on individual circumstances.
