Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research organization established to probe the fundamental structure of the universe. It employs physicists and engineers who utilize the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter. CERN's mission is to advance knowledge and understanding of the universe through groundbreaking research and innovation. The organization operates in multiple countries and employs a diverse workforce, fostering an environment of collaboration and inclusion.
Job Overview: The position of Electromechanical Technician within the Normal Conducting Magnets (NCM) section of CERN's Technology Department (TE) involves hands-on work with magnets that are crucial for the operation of CERN's accelerator complex. The NCM section is responsible for the design, construction, commissioning, maintenance, and upgrade of normal conducting magnets. The technician will participate in the consolidation of these magnets, assembly of new units, and conduct reception tests on components sourced from industry. This role is integral to ensuring the reliable performance of CERN's accelerators, and it offers the opportunity to work with unique technologies in a collaborative international team.
Duties and Responsibilities: As an Electromechanical Technician, your responsibilities will include: participating in the refurbishment, manufacture, and testing of normal conducting magnets in CERN workshops; compiling quality control documents related to these processes; carrying out preventive and corrective maintenance on installed magnets; contributing to the design and development of tools and equipment necessary for refurbishment and production activities; and ensuring compliance with safety and operational standards during all tasks. You will also be involved in the assembly of mechanical structures and equipment, and may be required to operate various types of machinery and equipment used in the maintenance and assembly processes.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a technical certificate or general secondary education, or equivalent relevant experience in Electromechanical Engineering or a related field. Proven experience in the manufacture and assembly of electromechanical devices, as well as in performing corrective and preventive maintenance on such devices, is essential. Additionally, candidates should be able to read and understand mechanical and electrical drawings. Experience in conventional mechanical machining, TIG/MIG welding, and brazing techniques is advantageous, as is familiarity with mechanical and electrical measurements.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a technical certificate or general secondary education in Electromechanical Engineering or a closely related field. This foundational education is critical for understanding the complexities of electromechanical systems and their applications within CERN's operations.
Experience: Candidates should have proven experience in the manufacture and assembly of electromechanical devices, as well as in performing maintenance tasks. This experience should include both corrective and preventive maintenance, ensuring that candidates are well-versed in the operational requirements of electromechanical systems. Familiarity with reading mechanical and electrical drawings is also necessary, as it is essential for the assembly and maintenance of equipment.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language being highly valued. This bilingual requirement reflects CERN's diverse and international working environment, where effective communication is key to collaboration and success.
Additional Notes: The position is offered as a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract thereafter. The role requires a commitment to a 40-hour work week and may involve work in radiation areas, underground installations, and other environments requiring specific safety measures. A valid driving license is necessary, and candidates must be prepared for stand-by duty as required. The selected candidate will need to obtain medical clearance due to the occupational health risks associated with the position. Compensation includes a competitive salary that is tax-free, 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance, and various allowances depending on individual circumstances.
