Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will have a diverse set of responsibilities that may vary depending on their specific area of assignment within the HRTB. Key duties include: preparing country and legal analyses, drafting legal background papers related to the State party reporting procedure and individual complaints; conducting research and drafting reports on the jurisprudence of treaty bodies; assisting with the handling of individual communications under various treaty body complaints procedures; providing support for inter-state communications; assisting in the preparation of country visits by the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT); taking notes during sessions and providing administrative support; contributing to outreach tasks, including the Branch newsletter; supporting the Universal Human Rights Index (UHRI) and treaty body documentation databases; developing training exercises for capacity building activities; preparing updates and reports for the General Assembly and Human Rights Council; organizing training activities; evaluating project proposals for funding; and performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications: To qualify for the internship program, applicants must be either a graduate or currently enrolled in a graduate school program (Master's degree or equivalent) or in the final academic year of a first-level university degree program (Bachelor's degree or equivalent) in fields such as law, political science, international relations, social sciences, or related areas. It is important to note that professional work experience is not a requirement for participation in the program, making it accessible for students and recent graduates eager to gain experience in the field of human rights.
