Job Overview: The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position at UNEP is designed for a highly motivated individual who is passionate about sustainable environmental management, energy transition, and climate issues. The intern will play a crucial role in supporting UNEP's Project activities, which include conducting research on renewable energy and sustainable energy transitions, as well as fostering new partnerships in this emerging sector. The intern will work closely with UNEP staff to assist in the delivery of various project components, including environmental legal and policy reviews, institutional capacity assessments, and the development and dissemination of training materials. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field of environmental governance and management, particularly in relation to energy development and climate resilience.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks aimed at supporting UNEP's initiatives in environmental governance and energy transition. Key responsibilities include:
Supporting the expansion of the global community of practice and outreach, which involves managing the Global Dialogue on Environment and Energy, developing and disseminating a monthly newsletter, facilitating discussions on LinkedIn, and maintaining contact lists.
Assisting in the delivery of webinars and online/hybrid trainings focused on environmental governance and management in the energy sector, including data collection and reporting for these events.
Conducting desk-based research and developing or updating country background papers on energy transition and social/environmental safeguards in renewable energy development.
Assisting in writing reports for training and workshop sessions.
Providing logistical support for the delivery of trainings and other planned events.
Performing any additional tasks as requested by the Programme Manager.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in relevant fields such as communications, environmental sciences, environmental policy, energy policy, climate change studies, renewable energy, or similar areas. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate a strong interest and familiarity with social media and online communications, as well as proficiency in standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. Experience with web-based content management systems is also desirable.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this internship includes either a graduate degree or a bachelor's degree in relevant fields. Candidates should have completed or be in the process of completing their studies in areas such as environmental sciences, environmental policy, energy policy, climate change studies, or renewable energy. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of environmental management and energy transition, as well as for effectively contributing to UNEP's projects and initiatives.
Experience: The internship position does not require extensive prior experience, but candidates should possess a strong interest in sustainable environmental management and energy transition. Familiarity with social media, online communications, and research methodologies will be beneficial. The internship is designed to provide practical experience and learning opportunities for individuals who are eager to develop their skills in the field of environmental governance and management.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French is also necessary, as it is another working language of the organization. Additionally, knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish) is considered an advantage, as it may enhance communication and collaboration within the international context of UNEP's work.
Additional Notes: This internship is unpaid and requires a full-time commitment of five days per week, totaling 35-40 hours. Interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. The internship duration is limited to a maximum of six months within UN Secretariat agencies.
