Job Overview: The Senior Researcher position in the Asia Division of Human Rights Watch focuses on developing and implementing a comprehensive research and advocacy agenda concerning human rights conditions in China. This role is crucial for monitoring and documenting the human rights situation in the country, which involves collecting and analyzing information from a variety of sources, including government reports, media articles, academic studies, and firsthand accounts from victims and witnesses. The researcher will be responsible for writing and publicizing reports, briefing papers, and submissions to international bodies, thereby disseminating HRW's findings and policy recommendations. The position requires a proactive approach to responding to news events and utilizing multimedia and social media to effectively communicate HRW's positions. Duties and Responsibilities: The Senior Researcher will have a wide range of responsibilities, including: researching, monitoring, and documenting the human rights situation in China; collecting and analyzing information from diverse sources; writing and publicizing reports and policy recommendations; identifying key political and human rights trends; responding to news events and making public interventions; conducting media interviews and high-level advocacy; contributing to internal policy debates; assisting in fundraising efforts; presenting human rights concerns to various stakeholders; collaborating with NGOs and local organizations; liaising with HRW staff globally; traveling internationally as required; working flexible hours to accommodate urgent events; delivering outputs in a timely manner; and performing any other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a bachelor’s level degree or equivalent working experience, with an advanced degree in international relations, journalism, law, social sciences, or related fields being desirable. A minimum of six years of professional-level experience working on China is required, along with a strong understanding of China’s civil society, media, and government policies. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to identify, research, analyze, and communicate important human rights developments effectively. Skills in conducting interviews safely, both remotely and in-person, are essential, as is the ability to devise strategies for research and advocacy. Familiarity with international human rights law and a commitment to advancing human rights are crucial. Excellent oral and written communication skills in both English and Mandarin are mandatory, along with strong interpersonal skills for collaboration within HRW and with external partners.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, with a preference for candidates holding an advanced (graduate) degree in relevant fields such as international relations, journalism, law, or social sciences. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of human rights issues and for conducting thorough research and analysis.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of six years of professional-level experience specifically focused on China. This experience should include a deep understanding of the political, social, and human rights landscape in China, as well as familiarity with the operations of civil society and media within the country. Candidates with experience working directly in China or with Chinese organizations will be preferred, as this will enhance their ability to navigate the challenges of conducting research and advocacy in the region.
Languages: Proficiency in English and Mandarin is mandatory for this position, as effective communication in both languages is crucial for conducting research, writing reports, and engaging in advocacy. Additional language skills may be considered an asset but are not required.
Additional Notes: This is a full-time position with a competitive salary range of USD $88,000 – 96,000 for candidates based in the US. HRW offers a relocation assistance package and will help employees obtain necessary work authorization if required.
