Job Overview: The intern will be based in the UNEP Regional Office for Africa (ROA) at the Nairobi duty station. This position is designed to support the implementation of activities aimed at achieving UNEP's objectives in the region. The intern will work closely with the RDC unit, contributing to various tasks that enhance the unit's effectiveness in coordinating with the UNRC and UNCT systems. This role is crucial for gaining practical experience in international environmental governance and sustainable development initiatives, providing the intern with exposure to high-level discussions and decision-making processes within the UN framework.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks that support the RDC unit's operations. These include:
Drafting minutes of meetings held by the RDC unit to ensure accurate records of discussions and decisions.
Conducting research to prepare background papers for meetings and reports related to the RDC's engagement with the UNRC and UNCT systems.
Drafting speaking points that will be used in meetings and processes coordinated by the RDC unit, ensuring that key messages are communicated effectively.
Collecting, collating, and analyzing statistics related to UNEP’s engagement with UNRCs and UNCTs in Africa, which will inform strategic planning and reporting.
Developing presentations for RDC engagements and meetings with UNRC and UNCT systems in Africa, helping to visually communicate important information and updates.
Performing other related duties as required, which may include administrative support and additional research tasks.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a first university degree in a field related to environmental science, conservation, natural resource management, engineering, project management, economics, or other related fields. An interest in international sustainable development and the implementation of programs, projects, and activities is highly desirable. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate strong computer skills, drafting and writing abilities, and the capacity to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a multicultural environment. Adaptability and teamwork skills are essential for success in this role.
Educational Background: The position requires a first university degree in a relevant field such as environmental science, conservation, natural resource management, engineering, project management, economics, or related disciplines. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of environmental issues and the frameworks for sustainable development.
