Job Overview:
The position of Regional Hub Coordinator for Cancer Registration in Latin America involves leading and coordinating the activities of the IARC Regional Hub for Cancer Registration in Latin America. The incumbent will work under the supervision of the GICR Programme Manager and senior scientific staff in the Cancer Surveillance Branch (CSU). The role includes developing and implementing GICR activities, providing technical support to cancer registries, and collaborating with health ministries and stakeholders in the region. The coordinator will also engage in educational activities, conduct epidemiological studies, and contribute to scientific publications and grant applications. This position is crucial for enhancing the quality and coverage of cancer data in Latin America, ultimately informing national cancer control policies and improving cancer outcomes.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Lead and coordinate the activities of the IARC Regional Hub for Cancer Registration in Latin America, ensuring alignment with GICR operational models. This includes regular communication with supervisors and principal investigators, providing technical advice to cancer registries, and evaluating their operations through site visits.
  • Collaborate with cancer registries to disseminate data via reports and research articles, addressing local quality issues and epidemiological insights.
  • Represent IARC/GICR at high-level meetings and expert consultations, preparing technical reports as needed.
  • Contribute to educational activities, providing tailored training and support to cancer registry staff, and liaising with GICRNet trainers.
  • Conduct descriptive epidemiological studies using cancer registry data, contributing to data collection, quality improvement, and statistical analyses.
  • Prepare scientific manuscripts and reports based on Hub activities, and assist in grant applications to secure research funding.
  • Contribute to CSU projects regarding global indicators and cancer registration, drafting reports and policy briefs to promote cancer registries' role in cancer control.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
Essential qualifications include a PhD in epidemiology, biostatistics, or a related field. Candidates must have at least five years of professional experience in cancer registration and epidemiological research, with proven leadership skills and an understanding of challenges faced in low- and middle-income countries. Desirable qualifications include supervisory experience and experience in coordinating multi-partner studies.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a PhD in epidemiology, biostatistics, or a similar research field. This advanced degree is essential for understanding the complexities of cancer registration and epidemiological research, which are critical for the role.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of five years of professional experience in cancer registration and cancer epidemiological research. Candidates should demonstrate proven leadership abilities and a deep understanding of the challenges faced in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Desirable experience includes supervisory roles and coordinating multi-partner studies, which would enhance the candidate's ability to manage diverse teams and projects effectively.

Languages:
Expert knowledge of English and Spanish is essential for this position, as the role involves communication and collaboration with stakeholders in Latin America. A working knowledge of Portuguese, French, or another UN language is desirable, as it would facilitate broader communication within the region and with international partners.

The position offers a competitive remuneration package, starting with an annual base salary of USD 71,335, along with a variable post adjustment reflecting the cost of living in Lyon. Benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
