Job Overview:
The position of Computing Engineer involves contributing to the administration, operation, support, and development of Geographic Information System (GIS) applications at CERN. The successful candidate will be part of the Geomatics team, which is responsible for measuring, collecting, and managing geospatial data related to CERN's infrastructure and equipment. This role requires collaboration with Future Collider Studies, such as the FCC and Muon Collider, to ensure the reliability and continuous improvement of dedicated GIS applications. The engineer will implement additional developments and enhancements to current web applications, maintain and support existing GIS web applications for both CERN and external users, and perform computing tasks related to GIS infrastructure and databases. The position demands a proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to continuous learning and improvement in the field of geospatial information systems.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Computing Engineer include:
  • Collaborating with Future Collider Studies to ensure the reliability and continuous improvement of GIS applications.
  • Implementing additional developments and enhancements to current web applications.
  • Maintaining and supporting existing GIS web applications for CERN and external users.
  • Performing computing tasks related to GIS infrastructure and databases.
  • Developing tools and scripts related to geospatial information and associated databases.
  • Engaging in problem-solving and troubleshooting to enhance the functionality of GIS applications.
  • Participating in team meetings and contributing to project planning and execution.
  • Keeping abreast of advancements in GIS technology and methodologies to ensure best practices are followed.
  • Documenting processes and maintaining records of GIS applications and data management activities.

Required Qualifications:
The required qualifications for the Computing Engineer position include:
  • Initial experience in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), particularly the ESRI suite, and in managing geospatial data related to infrastructure and equipment.
  • Initial experience in the development of web-based GIS applications and their maintenance.
  • Initial experience in developing tools and scripts related to geospatial information and associated databases.
  • Strong foundations in GIS software (desktop and server), ideally the ESRI suite (ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Enterprise).
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and JavaScript/TypeScript.
  • Practical knowledge of web technologies, including JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS, as well as web services (SOAP/REST) for system integration.
  • Familiarity with version control systems (Git).
  • Strong attention to detail and good organizational skills, with the ability to work autonomously and a proactive mindset.
  • Spoken and written proficiency in English or French, with a commitment to learn the basics of the other language.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Geomatics, GIS, computing, or a related field. Applicants without a university degree are not eligible for this position, and those with a PhD are also not eligible. The educational background should provide a solid foundation in geospatial technologies and data management principles, equipping candidates with the necessary skills to perform effectively in the role.

Experience:
The position requires a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in the relevant fields of Geomatics, GIS, computing, or related areas. This experience should ideally include practical applications of GIS technologies and involvement in projects that demonstrate the candidate's ability to contribute to the administration and development of GIS applications.

Languages:
Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory for this position. Candidates should also demonstrate a commitment to learning the basics of the other language, which is essential for effective communication within the diverse environment at CERN.

The contract duration for this position is 24 months, with a possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the job is fully onsite. The target start date for the position is June 1, 202
