Job Overview: The Multilingual Youth Program Specialist for Secondary Programs plays a crucial role in facilitating educational and enrichment programs for middle and high school youth from refugee and immigrant backgrounds. This position is designed to support the IRC Washington’s Youth Programs, which aim to equip youth with the necessary skills and resources to achieve academic success and pursue future opportunities. The specialist will co-design and facilitate programs that enhance literacy, English language acquisition, math skills, and social/emotional development. Additionally, the role involves serving as a liaison for Afghan or Ukrainian families, ensuring effective communication and cultural sensitivity. The educator will work to create a welcoming environment for youth, helping them navigate the U.S. education system and rebuild their futures with confidence.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Multilingual Youth Program Specialist include leading the implementation of middle and high school programs, focusing on academic growth in English language learning, math, science, and social-emotional development. The specialist will support curriculum development, lesson planning, and the design of activities tailored to various levels of English language proficiency. Responsibilities also include planning and leading group activities, managing classroom dynamics, and creating safe learning environments using trauma-informed approaches. The specialist will conduct outreach and registration for programs, maintain accurate tracking files, and communicate program updates to families. Additionally, the role involves resource development, including maintaining knowledge of educational standards and college pathways, and engaging with community organizations to enhance student support. The specialist will participate in community events, support translation needs, and comply with IRC policies and procedures.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess fluency in either Dari, Pashto, or Ukrainian, with a preference for those with lived experience as refugees or immigrants. A minimum of 2 years of experience in teaching, tutoring, or mentoring secondary youth is required, along with experience navigating post-secondary opportunities. Proficiency in written and spoken English, as well as professional proficiency in Dari and Pashto, is essential. A relevant degree or equivalent experience in youth development, college/career advising, or education is desirable. Experience in group youth enrichment programs and working with multilingual students or English Language Learners is also preferred. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to work independently and as part of a team, possess strong intercultural communication skills, and be adaptable to a fast-paced, multicultural environment.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a relevant degree in fields such as youth development, education, or social services. Equivalent experience in related areas may also be considered. Candidates should have a solid understanding of educational standards and practices, particularly those relevant to English language learners and refugee populations.
Experience: The position requires at least 2 years of experience in teaching, tutoring, or mentoring youth, particularly in secondary education settings. Experience working with refugees or immigrant populations is highly valued, as is familiarity with post-secondary education pathways and resources. Candidates should have a proven track record of engaging with youth in educational or enrichment programs.
Languages: Fluency in either Dari, Pashto, or Ukrainian is mandatory for this position, as the specialist will be working closely with Afghan or Ukrainian families. Additional Notes: This position is primarily based in middle and high schools located in Tukwila, Auburn, Kent, and Federal Way, with some remote work required at the IRC office in SeaTac or Renton. The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with occasional evening or weekend activities as needed. The compensation for this role ranges from $28.00 to $29.50 per hour, depending on various factors such as experience and location.
