Job Overview:
The UN Volunteer position focuses on supporting the Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago. The role involves conducting a Situational Analysis (SITAN) to assess the status of children's rights in the city, identifying key challenges and bottlenecks affecting child well-being, particularly for the most vulnerable populations, including migrant children. The volunteer will work closely with local stakeholders, including the City of San Fernando, communities, and children, to ensure that the analysis aligns with national policies and international guidelines. The position requires a commitment to enhancing child-sensitive and equity-focused planning, documenting innovations and good practices, and facilitating the engagement of children and adolescents in the SITAN process. The ultimate goal is to contribute to the development of a comprehensive action plan that addresses the identified barriers to children's rights and promotes their well-being in urban settings.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Support the City of San Fernando and stakeholders in identifying child well-being bottlenecks.
  • Conduct a comprehensive Situational Analysis (SITAN) aligned with the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the National Child Policy 202
  • Ensure the SITAN covers key dimensions of children's rights: survival, development, protection, and participation.
  • Collect, organize, and analyze data on children's rights in San Fernando.
  • Identify causes of shortfalls and inequities affecting children.
  • Integrate child sensitivity and equity considerations into socio-economic development planning and budgeting.
  • Document existing innovations and successful practices within the city.
  • Compile evidence to guide the design of the CFCI action plan.
  • Establish a baseline for measuring progress towards CFCI recognition. 1
  • Facilitate opportunities for children and adolescents to share their perspectives during the SITAN process. 1
  • Document and integrate children's views into SITAN findings and action plans. 1
  • Support young people in designing accessible engagement methods. 1
  • Encourage peer-to-peer learning and youth-led activities to strengthen ownership of the CFCI process.

Required Qualifications:
  • Strong understanding of child rights and child protection issues.
  • Experience in conducting situational analyses or similar assessments.
  • Knowledge of UNICEF's policies and procedures related to children's rights.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including government officials, community members, and children.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Cultural sensitivity and adaptability to work in a diverse environment.

Educational Background:
A degree in social sciences, public policy, international development, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in child rights, social work, or community development are preferred.

Experience:
A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in child rights advocacy, social research, or community development is required. Experience working with children and adolescents, particularly in urban settings, is highly desirable. Familiarity with UNICEF's work and the Convention on the Rights of the Child is an asset.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of Spanish or other local languages is considered an asset.

This is a national UN Volunteer assignment, and the volunteer will be responsible for arranging their own housing and living essentials. The position requires adaptability and cultural sensitivity, as well as a high level of professionalism.
