In 2023, the UN and the Government of Tajikistan launched the Joint Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for 2023-2026 (UNSDCF), which is designed to help the country tackle its development challenges. The UN Resident Coordinator (UNRC) leads the UN Country Team (UNCT) and ensures that the UN's support is coherent and coordinated through the implementation of the UNSDCF. The organization emphasizes partnerships with civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations, human rights institutions, academia, media, the private sector, and international partners to achieve its goals. The UNRC Office (UNRCO) in Tajikistan plays a crucial role in coordinating the activities of the UNCT and engaging with the Government and other stakeholders to respond to national priorities across humanitarian, development, and peace sectors.
Job Overview: The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position is designed to provide analytical support to the UN Resident Coordinator (UNRC) and the UN Country Team (UNCT) in Tajikistan. The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Head of UNRCO Tajikistan and will collaborate with team members to support efforts in conflict prevention and social cohesion. The intern will engage with various stakeholders, including UN agencies, development partners, and civil society actors, to understand the political and socio-economic developments and conflict dynamics in the region. The role is critical in identifying entry points for conflict prevention and social cohesion programming, which are essential for strengthening the capacity of agencies to support relevant programs and policies. The intern will also contribute to research and analysis on social cohesion and conflict-related themes, particularly focusing on the nexus of climate change, peace, and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in international development and humanitarian work while contributing to meaningful initiatives in Tajikistan.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including: engaging with UN agencies and development partners to understand political and socio-economic developments and conflict dynamics; identifying appropriate entry points for conflict prevention and sustaining peace; liaising with academia and think tanks for research and analysis on social cohesion and conflict-related themes; supporting the UNRCO in engaging with the UN-IFI Surge Advisory Team to design social cohesion and conflict prevention initiatives for Tajik border communities; collaborating with relevant UN agencies to explore support and capacity development opportunities focused on border communities; and identifying actions to build national and local capacities for conflict prevention and social cohesion. These responsibilities require a proactive approach and the ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). While professional work experience is not required for the UN Internship Programme, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Applicants must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s, or Ph.D. Program, or have completed such programs. Proof of eligibility must be attached to the application, and an official certificate will be required at a later stage.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this internship includes being enrolled in or having completed a graduate program or being in the final year of a bachelor's degree program. The field of study should be closely related to the internship's focus, which involves conflict prevention, social cohesion, and development. This ensures that the intern has the necessary theoretical knowledge and understanding to contribute effectively to the UNRC and UNCT's objectives.
Experience: While no professional work experience is required for this internship, applicants should have relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the responsibilities of the position. Languages: Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as it is another working language.
