Job Overview:
The ESOL Instructor plays a crucial role in delivering integrated English language instruction tailored for non-native English speakers. This position requires the instructor to develop and customize curriculum and instructional materials that meet the diverse needs of students enrolled in the program. The instructor will be responsible for supporting various aspects of student engagement, including recruitment, registration, attendance tracking, retention, and assessment of student progress. This part-time position consists of 18.75 hours per week and reports to the Adult Education Instructional Supervisor. Classes are scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings, with Mondays designated for orientation and registration of new students, which occurs throughout the year. The instructor must be adept at creating a supportive and effective learning environment that fosters student engagement and success.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary duties of the ESOL Instructor include delivering integrated ESOL instruction that combines English language lessons with job skills, workforce preparation, digital literacy, civics, and other essential life skills. The instructor is expected to plan and prepare curricula and lesson plans for mixed-level classes, ensuring that the learning needs of students across various English proficiency levels are met. Responsibilities also include utilizing community volunteers as classroom assistants, managing lesson plan activities, documenting student progress through goal setting and conference notes, and assisting in recruitment and retention efforts. The instructor will orient and confer with current and prospective students, helping them complete necessary intake and enrollment forms both virtually and in-person. Administering English language assessments to measure student progress, maintaining accurate attendance records, and documenting case notes and assessment data are also key responsibilities. The instructor must maintain a positive learning environment, facilitate activities that build cultural knowledge, and encourage collaboration among students. Regular communication with adult education team members and participation in staff meetings and professional development opportunities are also required.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree (4-year) as a minimum requirement. While a certificate in Adult Education, TEFL, TESL, or TESOL is preferred, relevant professional experience in education or human services is strongly preferred. Experience working with immigrants or refugees is also highly desirable. The instructor should demonstrate a strong desire to support vulnerable individuals and families, possess enthusiasm for adult education and language learning, and have an interest in issues related to immigrants, refugees, and the resettlement process. Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively are essential for success in this role.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field. Additionally, completion of a certificate program in Adult Education, TEFL, TESL, or TESOL is preferred, which would enhance the instructor's ability to effectively teach English to non-native speakers and support their learning journey.

Experience:
The position requires relevant professional experience in education and/or human services, with a strong preference for candidates who have experience working with immigrant or refugee populations. This experience is crucial for understanding the unique challenges faced by these individuals and for providing effective support in their language learning and integration processes.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this position. While bilingual abilities in a language spoken by an IRC client group are desired, the primary language of instruction will be English, and the instructor must be able to communicate effectively with students who may have limited English proficiency.

Additional Notes:
This is a part-time, non-exempt position with a work schedule of 18.75 hours per week. The compensation for this role ranges from $20.20 to $22.50 per hour, depending on various factors such as labor market conditions, job type, and individual candidate experience. The IRC is an Equal Opportunity Employer and adheres to professional standards that emphasize integrity, service, equality, and accountability. The organization offers a comprehensive benefits package, including sick days, paid time off, medical and dental insurance, a retirement savings plan, and an Employee Assistance Program to support staff and their families.
