Job Overview:
The Economic Affairs Officer will be responsible for conducting economic or sector analysis, developing socio-economic databases, and interpreting econometric models to analyze trends and policy impacts. The role involves drafting technical papers and analytical studies on various aspects of economic development, attending international meetings to gather information, and providing substantive support to the Director in implementing the Office’s mandate. The officer will also manage the work program of the Office, supervise general services staff, and facilitate communication between different branches of the organization. This position requires a proactive approach to support the Director in convening meetings and managing the Office’s operations effectively.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Economic Affairs Officer will undertake a variety of responsibilities, including: developing socio-economic databases and qualitative information for assignments; interpreting and adapting econometric models; drafting inputs for technical papers and analytical studies; analyzing policy proposals; attending meetings to collect information; organizing expert group meetings and seminars; preparing speeches and presentations for senior staff; managing the Office’s work program; supervising general services staff; collaborating with Chiefs of Section on resource prioritization; ensuring effective internal coordination; managing correspondence for the Director; and performing other related administrative tasks as required. The officer will also assist in formulating and reporting on the Office’s work plan and support media liaison and website improvements.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong background in economic research and analysis, with a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in relevant fields. They should have experience in policy formulation and the application of economic principles in development programs. Additionally, candidates must demonstrate experience in managing regular and extrabudgetary resources, drafting background notes for senior officials, and organizing high-level intergovernmental meetings on financing for development.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in economics or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, and the application of economic principles in development programs. Candidates should have experience managing resources, drafting notes for senior officials, and organizing high-level meetings at the international level.

Languages:
English is required for this position, with a minimum proficiency level of UN Level II in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. French is also a working language of the United Nations, and proficiency in French is considered an asset but not mandatory.

Additional Notes:
This position is funded through extrabudgetary resources and is initially for a period of one year, subject to availability of funds and budgetary approval. The appointment may be renewed based on the continuation of the mandate. External candidates will undergo a probationary period of one year under a fixed-term appointment.
