Job Overview: The Environmental and Social Compliance Specialist will play a crucial role in leading the monitoring of the effective implementation of Management Action Plans (MAPs) prepared by IFC and MIGA in response to compliance investigation findings. This position requires working under the direction of the Compliance Manager and involves overseeing the compliance monitoring approach, developing case monitoring plans, and preparing monitoring reports. The specialist will also coordinate stakeholder engagements and ensure quality assurance in the monitoring processes. The role emphasizes the importance of learning and evaluation, as the specialist will document lessons learned and collaborate with the Advisory team to enhance compliance practices. The position is integral to ensuring that IFC and MIGA adhere to their environmental and social policies and effectively address any non-compliance issues.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Environmental and Social Compliance Specialist include:
Leading the implementation of CAO’s compliance monitoring approach, supporting the Compliance Manager and case teams in planning and executing enhanced monitoring processes.
Developing and overseeing case monitoring plans, ensuring their effective implementation.
Preparing comprehensive monitoring reports in collaboration with investigation case teams, managing the production and quality assurance of these reports.
Planning and coordinating CAO’s compliance monitoring cycle, including field visits and stakeholder engagements.
Engaging with key stakeholders, including complainants, IFC/MIGA staff, and Board members, to document necessary interactions.
Supporting the Compliance Manager in ensuring consistency in monitoring plans, analysis, and reporting.
Identifying and documenting lessons learned to strengthen compliance monitoring practices.
Coaching and guiding Compliance staff and consultants in monitoring practices, fostering teamwork and shared success.
Required Qualifications: The required qualifications for the Environmental and Social Compliance Specialist position include:
A Master’s degree in a relevant field such as economics, monitoring/measurement & evaluation, auditing, or project management, with a focus on quantitative/qualitative data analysis and research methods.
Strong analytical skills, with the ability to conduct quality reviews of analyses performed by others and package results for relevant stakeholders.
Experience working with private sector clients in emerging markets across various sectors, including energy, agribusiness, extractive industries, and infrastructure.
Highly developed interpersonal skills to engage and influence a diverse range of stakeholders effectively.
Advanced project management skills, with the ability to monitor complex initiatives independently.
Excellent communication skills to convey complex messages and handle difficult questions effectively.
Demonstrated judgment and the ability to navigate sensitive environments while managing confidentiality.
Educational Background: The educational background required for the Environmental and Social Compliance Specialist position includes a Master’s degree in a relevant field such as economics, monitoring/measurement & evaluation, auditing, or project management. Candidates should have a strong emphasis on quantitative and qualitative data analysis and research methods, with an understanding of IFC’s environmental and social standards and CAO’s processes preferred.
Experience: Candidates for the Environmental and Social Compliance Specialist position should have a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in areas such as monitoring and evaluation, auditing, project management, or business administration. Experience in environmental policy and compliance analysis is considered an asset, as is familiarity with private sector clients in emerging markets across various sectors.
