Job Overview: The Senior Communications Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the communications efforts of UNHCR, particularly in the context of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. This position involves regular monitoring of media and local situations related to UNHCR's work, as well as organizing press briefings and events to raise public awareness about the challenges faced by refugees and displaced persons. The incumbent will contribute to the production of information materials, including articles, reports, and newsletters, aimed at informing both national and international audiences about UNHCR's activities and the needs of affected populations. The role requires strong communication skills, the ability to engage with various stakeholders, and a proactive approach to identifying opportunities for advocacy and outreach. The Senior Communications Assistant will also manage social media channels, ensuring that content is relevant, engaging, and aligned with UNHCR's messaging and objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Senior Communications Assistant will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
Monitoring media coverage and local developments related to UNHCR's work and the humanitarian situation in Ukraine.
Organizing administrative and logistical arrangements for press briefings, workshops, and conferences.
Contributing to the production of information materials for public awareness campaigns, including articles, reports, and newsletters.
Liaising with printers and other vendors for the production of brochures and publications.
Drafting routine correspondence and maintaining the office's website and information databases.
Compiling and distributing a daily news clipping service to keep staff informed of relevant media coverage.
Distributing press statements and other information to media outlets and UNHCR offices.
Maintaining an organized filing system and appointments diary for the communications team.
Supporting the identification and management of risks related to communications activities and seeking opportunities to enhance outreach efforts. 1
Performing other related duties as required by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the Senior Communications Assistant position should possess the following qualifications:
A minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience with a High School Diploma, or 1 year of relevant experience with a Bachelor’s degree or higher.
Strong communication and computer skills, including proficiency in drafting and documentation.
Familiarity with digital content production, social media management, and web publishing is highly desirable.
Completion of UNHCR learning programs or specific training relevant to the functions of the position is an asset.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes:
A High School Diploma is the minimum requirement, with a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations, Journalism, Political Science, or a related field being preferred.
Relevant certifications or licenses in communication, journalism, or public relations are advantageous.
Continuous professional development and training in communication strategies and digital media are encouraged.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in communications, public relations, or a related field. Experience working with a UN agency, humanitarian organization, or international NGO is highly desirable. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in managing social media channels, producing digital content, and engaging with diverse stakeholders, including media, NGOs, and government entities. Familiarity with the humanitarian context in Ukraine and the challenges faced by displaced populations is a significant advantage.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, both spoken and written, with a minimum overall ability of B2 level. Proficiency in Ukrainian is also required to effectively communicate with local stakeholders and communities. Knowledge of additional languages is considered an asset, particularly those relevant to the region.
