Job Overview: The position of VNU - Volontaire des Nations Unies involves supporting the United Nations Joint Office for Human Rights (BCNUDH) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The volunteer will assist in community mobilization and will be responsible for monitoring, documenting, training, advocacy, and inter-agency coordination concerning the rights of indigenous peoples. The role is critical in reinforcing the promotion, protection, and monitoring of indigenous rights in the DRC, providing technical support to BCNUDH and its national and international partners. The volunteer will engage in various activities aimed at enhancing the capacity of local authorities, indigenous communities, and civil society organizations, ensuring that the voices of marginalized groups are heard and their rights are upheld. This position requires a commitment to human rights and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by indigenous populations in the DRC.
Duties and Responsibilities: The volunteer will have several key responsibilities, including:
Supporting the monitoring and documentation of human rights violations against indigenous peoples by assisting teams in collecting, analyzing, and documenting these violations.
Contributing to the preparation of thematic and periodic reports for various UN bodies, including the Secretary-General's reports and the Human Rights Council.
Participating in joint monitoring missions in affected areas to ensure comprehensive oversight of the situation of indigenous peoples.
Assisting in the implementation of the Indigenous Peoples Law (2022) by participating in technical meetings and supporting teams in tracking national implementation measures.
Helping to organize and facilitate workshops for local authorities, indigenous communities, civil society organizations, and state services to enhance their capacity and understanding of indigenous rights.
Maintaining regular communication with indigenous organizations, national and international NGOs, and technical and financial partners to foster collaboration and coordination.
Supporting advocacy efforts by preparing orientation notes, briefings, and communication materials to raise awareness about indigenous rights.
Engaging with communities to build trust and ensure culturally sensitive communication, while also contributing to international observances related to indigenous peoples and human rights.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for this position should possess strong cultural sensitivity and the ability to work effectively with vulnerable communities. Excellent communication skills are essential, as is the capacity to work under pressure in a multicultural environment. The volunteer should demonstrate a commitment to human rights and the promotion of social justice, particularly for marginalized groups.
