To facilitate this, the organization is seeking two specialists in fisheries waste management based in Seychelles.
Job Overview: The position of Specialist in Fisheries Waste Management involves significant responsibilities related to project management, particularly focusing on fisheries waste management and the prevention and reduction of plastic pollution. The incumbent will be tasked with the local implementation of a project aimed at addressing the challenges posed by abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear in Seychelles. This role requires close collaboration with various stakeholders, including government representatives and local communities, to ensure effective project execution. The specialist will serve as the main point of contact for all project-related matters in Seychelles, ensuring that all activities align with the project's objectives and are executed efficiently. The role also involves preparing detailed work plans and budgets, managing contracts, and facilitating training and capacity development activities. The specialist will be expected to prepare regular reports on project activities and participate in meetings to discuss ongoing progress and results dissemination at the national level.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Specialist in Fisheries Waste Management include: serving as the main focal point for project-related matters in Seychelles; identifying national stakeholders as outlined in the Project Document; ensuring effective coordination and communication with government counterparts and identified stakeholders; supporting the Project Coordinator in preparing a detailed work plan and budget for project activities; assisting in the preparation and management of contracts and terms of reference; organizing field visits, meetings, training, and capacity development activities; preparing regular reports on project implementation; participating in virtual and in-person project meetings; supporting the dissemination of project results at the national level; and collaborating with the communication team to prepare relevant communication materials.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a university degree in marine ecosystem management, plastic/solid waste management, or a related field relevant to fisheries development. Additionally, a minimum of two years of professional experience in project management assistance and fisheries development is required. Candidates must also have a working knowledge of English and be nationals of Seychelles. FAO core competencies such as results focus, teamwork, communication, building effective relationships, and knowledge sharing are essential for this role.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a university degree in a relevant field such as marine ecosystem management, plastic/solid waste management, or fisheries development. Candidates must ensure that their qualifications are recognized by the World Higher Education Database (WHED), which is maintained by the International Association of Universities and UNESCO.
Experience: The position requires at least two years of professional experience in project management assistance and fisheries development. Candidates should have experience working in developing countries and familiarity with the preparation and management of UN projects and processes, preferably with the FAO. Demonstrated capacity to establish working relationships with government and non-government representatives is also essential.
Languages: A working knowledge of English is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in French is considered an asset, as it enhances communication with a broader range of stakeholders and supports effective project implementation.
