Job Overview: The Close Protection Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of UN personnel, particularly high-profile individuals, in a challenging environment. Duties and Responsibilities: The Close Protection Officer will undertake a variety of duties, including but not limited to: coordinating personal protection planning and operations; providing guidance to close protection units; producing operational plans; liaising with host country authorities and other organizations; ensuring compliance with UN methodologies; preparing post-operation reports; conducting briefings and risk assessments; coordinating training exercises; assessing performance of close protection officers; contributing to budget proposals; and performing additional duties as assigned. The officer must demonstrate a high level of professionalism and commitment to the UN's goals, particularly in terms of gender equality and effective communication.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong understanding of internal security policies and procedures, particularly those relevant to the mission area. They should have the ability to gather information from various sources, apply good judgment, and remain calm in emergencies. A high level of physical fitness, emotional stability, and a trustworthy demeanor are essential. The officer must also demonstrate effective communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to tailor communication to different audiences. Educational Background: A high school diploma or equivalent is required for this position. Additionally, candidates with a UNDSS Close Protection Supervisor Certification (CPSC) and agency trauma bag certification or equivalent first aid certification are preferred. Relevant training in military or police procedures, self-defense techniques, and martial arts is desirable. Certification in UN weapons training and investigation techniques is also beneficial.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in close protection with a national, private, or international security organization, or five years with a first-level university degree. At least two years of experience in close protection management at the level of a close protection team leader is required. Experience in international settings, particularly in conflict or post-conflict environments, is essential. Proficiency in the use of close protection weapons, communications, and surveillance equipment is also necessary, along with experience in conducting close protection training.
Languages: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, candidates must demonstrate proficiency in both languages at UN Level III for reading, writing, listening, and speaking. This level indicates a high degree of fluency and the ability to communicate effectively in both languages.
