Job Overview:

Interns will work directly with the ILO's social protection team in New Delhi, engaging in the Promoting and Building Social Protection in South Asia (SPSA) project. This project aims to extend inclusive and sustainable social protection to various categories of informal workers, including gig workers, platform workers, care workers, and migrant workers. Interns will be involved in research, policy development, and capacity-building activities, providing them with practical experience in the field of social protection and labor rights. The internship is designed to enhance understanding of ILO principles and strategies, although it does not guarantee future employment with the organization.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be responsible for conducting comprehensive desk reviews of social protection schemes that benefit informal workers in India, analyzing the effectiveness of these schemes in light of the Code on Social security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Security, 202
  • They will research international best practices for extending social protection to informal workers and contribute to the development of policy briefs that support advocacy and technical cooperation activities. Additionally, interns will assist in drafting Terms of Reference for research contracts, editing reports for compliance with ILO guidelines, and providing logistical support for capacity-building initiatives. They will also engage in stakeholder communication and support the overall objectives of the SPSA project.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must have a strong background in research related to social protection, with a focus on gig and platform work. A good understanding of public policy in the Indian context is essential, along with experience in financing social protection schemes and gender-transformative approaches. Interns should possess strong analytical skills and the ability to synthesize complex information into clear and concise reports. Familiarity with statistical software and data analysis is highly desirable, as is the ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment.

Educational Background:
Applicants should be completing a Master's program or pursuing a PhD in relevant fields such as Economics, Law, Public Policy, or Development Studies. For those who have already completed a Master's degree, it should have been completed no later than December 2024, ensuring that candidates are well-versed in contemporary issues related to social protection.

Experience:
Relevant experience in research, particularly in the areas of social protection and labor rights, is required. Candidates should demonstrate an understanding of the dynamics of gig and platform work, as well as the financing mechanisms of social protection schemes. Experience in public policy analysis within the Indian context will be an asset, as will any prior involvement in capacity-building or advocacy initiatives.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, with strong policy and research drafting skills. Knowledge of local languages will be considered an asset, enhancing the intern's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and contribute to the project's objectives.

Additional Notes:
The internship is for a duration of six months and is not intended to lead to permanent employment with the ILO. Interns will receive a monthly stipend based on the cost of living in New Delhi, and any travel expenses to the duty station will be the responsibility of the intern. It is important to note that the ILO does not cover insurance costs for accidents or illnesses incurred during the internship, and candidates are advised to secure their own insurance coverage.
