Job Posting Organization: The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is a global initiative that mobilizes volunteers to contribute to peace and development efforts worldwide. Established in 1970, UNV operates in over 130 countries, engaging thousands of volunteers annually. The mission of UNV is to promote volunteerism to support peace and development, and it aims to enhance the impact of volunteerism on the lives of individuals and communities. UNV is committed to fostering a culture of volunteerism and ensuring that volunteers are recognized for their contributions to society. The organization employs a diverse workforce and collaborates with various UN agencies to implement its mission effectively.
Job Overview: The Online Volunteer position is designed to support the Volunteer Solutions Section (VSS) of UNV in finalizing a crucial institutional document known as the Conditions of Service for UN Volunteers. This role is pivotal in ensuring that the document is not only visually appealing but also accessible to all users, including those with disabilities. The volunteer will work closely with the Communications Team to ensure that the final document adheres to UNV branding and style guidelines. The primary focus will be on the formatting and layout of the document, which spans 148 pages, rather than on the content itself. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the UN's mission by enhancing the presentation of important volunteer service policies.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Online Volunteer will be tasked with several key responsibilities, including:
Reviewing the final Word document to ensure consistency in formatting, which includes checking margins, typography, spacing, images, tables, headers, footers, and overall layout.
Designing a visually coherent layout for the publication-ready PDF, ensuring it aligns with UNV branding and style guidelines.
Ensuring that the final PDF document is fully accessible, which involves proper tagging, providing alternative text for images, establishing a logical reading order, and ensuring compliance with accessibility standards for individuals with disabilities.
Collaborating with the Volunteer Solutions Section and the Communications Team to ensure that all formatting and design elements meet the required standards.
Meeting the deadline for the PDF file to be ready by 27 March 2026, ensuring timely delivery of the project.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the Online Volunteer position should possess strong attention to detail and a keen eye for design. Familiarity with document formatting and layout design is essential, as is experience with accessibility standards for documents. The ideal candidate should have proficiency in using Microsoft Word and PDF editing software. Additionally, the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote setting is crucial. Strong communication skills are also necessary to effectively liaise with team members and ensure that the project meets all requirements.
Educational Background: While specific educational qualifications are not explicitly stated, a background in graphic design, communications, or a related field would be advantageous. Knowledge of document design principles and accessibility standards is highly desirable. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to the values of the United Nations and an understanding of volunteerism.
Experience: Experience in document design, formatting, and accessibility is preferred. Candidates should have a proven track record of working on similar projects, ideally within a non-profit or international organization context. Familiarity with UNV's mission and objectives would be beneficial, although not mandatory.
Languages: Proficiency in English is mandatory, as all communications and documentation will be in English. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly those commonly used in UN operations, would be considered an asset but is not required for this position.
Additional Notes: This is a volunteer position, and as such, it may not offer financial compensation. However, it provides valuable experience working with a prestigious international organization and contributes to meaningful global initiatives. The role is remote, allowing for flexibility in working hours, but candidates must be able to meet the project deadlines. The position is open to individuals from various backgrounds, and UNV encourages applications from diverse candidates.
