Job Overview: The Interpreter Assistant position is crucial for facilitating communication between asylum seekers, refugees, and UNHCR staff. The primary function of this role is to provide accurate and professional interpretation and translation services between the assigned language, Jarai, and English. The Interpreter Assistant will be responsible for translating documents related to Registration (REG), Refugee Status Determination (RSD), Resettlement (RST), Community Services, and other protection purposes. This role also involves interpreting during interviews and counseling sessions, as well as participating in various protection information sessions and training. The position requires a high level of proficiency in both languages to ensure effective communication and understanding of sensitive issues faced by refugees and asylum seekers. The Interpreter Assistant will report to a supervisor and may also be required to assist other UNHCR offices and staff members as needed. Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Interpreter Assistant include:
Accurately interpreting and translating documents and conversations from Jarai to English and vice versa.
Interpreting during REG/RSD/RST/CS/Protection interviews and counseling sessions for asylum seekers and refugees.
Providing interpretation services for other UNHCR offices and delegations when requested and approved.
Participating in protection information sessions, briefings, and training, including best interest determination sessions.
Handling telephone inquiries from asylum seekers and refugees, ensuring accurate reporting of each call for database recording.
Performing additional interpretation and translation tasks as assigned by supervisors.
Supporting the organization by interpreting written materials such as newspapers, reports, and magazines.
Assisting in arranging meetings and taking minutes or notes during discussions with high-ranking officials.
Facilitating immigration and customs formalities for official personnel at the airport. 1
Responding to queries related to the area of responsibility and managing risks effectively. 1
Carrying out other related duties as required by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications: The required qualifications for the Interpreter Assistant position include:
Proven skills in communicating proficiently in both Jarai and English, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Professional conduct and ethics in performing interpretation and translation services.
Prior experience in interpretation or translation is desirable but not mandatory.
Ability to handle complex information and communicate it effectively.
