Job Overview:
The position of Human Rights Interpreter/Translator involves working closely with the OHCHR Myanmar Team to monitor and report on human rights violations in Myanmar. This role is crucial in supporting the OHCHR's mandate and ensuring effective communication with victims and witnesses of human rights abuses. Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Human Rights Interpreter/Translator include:
  • Monitoring media and social media in Myanmar languages to identify potential human rights violations and abuses.
  • Identifying victims, witnesses, and other primary sources of information regarding human rights violations.
  • Liaising with members of the Myanmar Team to facilitate communication with identified sources.
  • Providing technical assistance and interpretation during formal communications with sources.
  • Supporting the implementation of the OHCHR Myanmar Team's mandate by assisting in conducting interviews and responding to reporting obligations.
  • Translating OHCHR public documents with a focus on terminology relevant to international human rights law.
  • Ensuring adherence to the principle of 'do no harm' in all interactions with sources.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a High School Diploma as a minimum requirement, along with five years of relevant professional experience in interpretation and/or translation. An excellent command of English and Myanmar languages is essential, and knowledge of other languages commonly spoken in Myanmar is advantageous. Previous experience in interpreting for one-on-one meetings, group meetings, and training activities is required. Familiarity with human rights terminology and prior working experience with OHCHR are desirable qualifications.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes at least a High School Diploma. However, higher educational qualifications in relevant fields may be beneficial and could enhance a candidate's profile.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of five years of relevant professional experience in interpretation and/or translation. Candidates should have a proven track record of working in similar roles, particularly in contexts related to human rights or international law.

Languages:
Mandatory languages for this position include Burmese and English. Proficiency in other languages commonly used in Myanmar is considered an advantage and may enhance communication with a broader range of sources.
