Job Overview: The Political Affairs Officer plays a crucial role in monitoring and analyzing political, human rights, and humanitarian issues within assigned regions. The officer is responsible for preparing analytical reports, drafting correspondence for senior UN officials, and coordinating with UN field presences on the implementation of strategies related to hate speech and atrocity prevention. The role requires frequent interaction with various stakeholders, including UN staff, governments, and civil society organizations, to ensure effective communication and collaboration in preventing genocide and related crimes.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for reviewing and monitoring activities in the assigned country or region, coordinating working groups on hate speech, and making recommendations for action by the United Nations. The officer will analyze political and humanitarian issues, prepare reports for the General Assembly and other bodies, and draft notes and speeches for senior officials. Additionally, the officer will support the implementation of the UN Strategy on Hate Speech, participate in fact-finding missions, maintain contacts with other UN sectors and international organizations, and organize conferences and seminars related to the Strategy and Plan of Action. The role also includes collecting and disseminating good practices related to countering hate speech and performing other related duties as required.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security, or conflict resolution. Experience in the United Nations or similar international organizations is required, along with desirable experience in fieldwork, program management, and staff supervision. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of political and humanitarian issues and possess the ability to analyze complex situations and provide actionable recommendations.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree combined with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in relevant fields such as political science, international relations, or law. Candidates should have experience working in the United Nations or similar international organizations, with field experience being desirable. Experience in program or project management and in supervising staff is also beneficial.
Languages: English is required at UN Level III for reading, writing, listening, and speaking. French is also a working language of the United Nations, and proficiency in French is considered an asset but not mandatory for this position.
