Job Overview: The EmergencyNurse position at the United Nations Health Care Center in Addis Ababa is a vital role that focuses on providing primary health care to UN staff and their dependents. The nurse will lead emergency response efforts, influence public health programs, and ensure the delivery of high-quality medical services. This role requires a proactive approach to patient care, including responding to emergency calls, assisting in patient transport, and performing triage and first aid. The nurse will work under the guidance of the Chief Medical Officer and the Head Nurse, contributing to the health education and occupational health initiatives within the UN community. Duties and Responsibilities: The Emergency Nurse will be responsible for a comprehensive set of duties, including but not limited to: responding to emergency calls and assisting in patient transport; performing triage and administering first aid to patients before physician arrival; ordering and conducting basic medical tests for diagnosis; recording patient health history, vital signs, and lab results; performing physical examinations and minor procedures; administering primary care to all age groups and genders; taking laboratory samples for analysis and performing point-of-care laboratory testing; administering vaccinations and maintaining the cold chain; conducting diagnostic screening tests and providing routine care when the Medical Officer is absent; accompanying patients in medical evacuations; preparing staff for travel, including vaccines and health instructions; participating in health education, workplace assessments, and occupational health initiatives; providing training on Basic Life Support and First Aid for UN staff; dispensing medications and managing stock; working various shifts to ensure 24-hour Health Care Center coverage; serving as custodian of medical equipment assigned to the nurse and conducting regular inventory; ensuring all medical equipment is in good working condition and regular preventive maintenance is carried out; and being available for deployment to UNHCC field Health Care Centers within Ethiopia as needed.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a university degree (B.S. or equivalent) in nursing or a related field, along with national registration and a license to practice. A valid certification in Basic and Advanced Life Support or equivalent emergency training is mandatory. The role requires a comprehensive understanding of health care practices, particularly in emergency and primary care settings, as well as the ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.
Educational Background: A university degree in nursing or a related field is required for this position. Candidates must also have national registration and a valid license to practice nursing in Ethiopia. Additional certifications in emergency care, such as Basic and Advanced Life Support, are essential for fulfilling the responsibilities of this role.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of seven years of experience in nursing or a related area. Experience in data analytics or a related field is desirable, as is work experience in an international organization. Additionally, experience in instructing emergency training courses, such as Basic Life Support and First Aid, is considered an advantage.
Languages: Fluency in oral and written English is required for this position, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is advantageous and may enhance a candidate's application.
Additional Notes: This position is locally recruited, and only applicants who are Ethiopian nationals or possess a valid residence and work permit in Ethiopia are eligible for consideration. The contract will be administered through the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) under a Local Individual Contractor Agreement. The UN Clinic operates 24/7, and the selected candidate will work a maximum of 37.5 hours per week, with shifts of 12 hours each. Any extra working hours will be compensated with compensatory time-off (CTO), and no overtime payment will be applicable. The evaluation process for qualified candidates will include a technical assessment test followed by a competency-based interview. The selected candidate may also be deployed to other UNHCC satellite clinics as per organizational needs. Importantly, the United Nations does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process.
